Put me down as a possible.  It'll depend on a whole host of things, mostly work related, that are impossible to predict right now!

Since I'm not from the area, what is the weather like at BSF in January/February?

I'm in.  Just give me an idea of dates/expense and such.  I may have to limit it to a weekend (or at least a long weekend) but I'd love to do it.   :D   Been a year since I've been able to go after a nice hog and it's time again.

Sounds great to me.  I'll need a little lead time to schedule off work.  Hawkeye6, it gets cold!  My guess would be 20 degree or lower at night.  Near freezing to 45 degree's or so during the day.  Snow possible.  Just an educated guess.  I was in Cumberland gap, Christmas eve 1975, and it snowed.  Haven't been back up that way in years, but am looking forward to it.  Anyone hunted there before?

Well, like I said, I'm interested.  If it works, fine.  If not, well, maybe next year...

I'm from NE Indiana, near Fort Wayne (FWIW).

Keep me posted on the dates and such.  If I can work it into my schedule, I might just do that.  But I won;t know until I see how the yearend goes.

Tim, where are you from in Chicagoland.  PM if you want.  I used to live up there, too.  Maybe if the BSF works out for both of us we can carpool?

Weather-wise, that sounds about like what we get up here at that time of year.

also, we'll need to do some scouting, so once we have a date set, maybe we could pick a weekend in Nov or Dec and do some group scouting...

Any weekend in Nov or Dec is ok by me. I'm closer than you are, so your schedule should be the one we work around.

We might need to take a poll of preferred methods and rifles so that we can mark if we need to and map accordingly. I'm not a stand hunter myself, but I'd be happy to mark for them.

Hawkeye,
PM sent.  If any other guys from Chicagoland are thinking of heading down, we should all get in touch and see if we can coordinate.  Like I said, a long weekend would be best and any weekend in Jan/Feb would be especially great as construction here is pretty much dead that time of year.

cknight98,

Sending you a PM with personal contact info.  I imagine you may be participating in the bear/boar weekend at foothills WMA. I'll be off after bushytail most all weekend myself, hiding from the crowds.

Opening days at WMAs are kinda like shopping at Wal-Mart on a Friday night.

I've got vacation the last week of October and the first week of November.  I'll probably go up sometime during my vacation and have a walk about  .  Who are the local boys?

I might be up for it.  Are maps available for the area?  Also, what is the closest town?  I've gotten a general idea of where it is by looking on a state map, but I haven't quite pinned it down.
Later,

I'm going to scout BSF with one of my coworkers in a few weeks. He just had a bad archery weekend; he could use some fun.

It's going to be a busy boar season for me; I made a deal with a farmer to hunt boar on his property as long as I take some coyote too.

I called BSF today and didn't get awhole lot of information other than a Big game license is required as well as the permit to hunt BSF.  I was not clear if a type 94 WMA permit is required or not.  I requested an "info package" be mailed but was told they didn't do that.  I kind of got the impression that this might be the typical government worker who could have been more helpful if her nails were dry......Looking more and more like a scouting trip is in order.....ROAD TRIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some friends and I are planning a hunt there with bows in Feb. An out of state license is required in addition to the $5 permit. About $100 bucks I think.

I was planning on late November or early December myself, but there's no reason not to get the lay of the land.  There is a big difference between October/November and January/February. It'll probably want to be scouted again after the vegetation goes to sleep. I've not hunted BSF before; I was going to go up soon anyway and do some road and social scouting with one of my coworkers. I'd rather be pointed to the right area of the park by a local.

How many tree stand hunters are going? How many ground standers? How many still hunters? I'd rather set labelled waypoints than markers; some people have an annoying habit of standing on other people's markers.

There are PDF files online that include maps, safety zones, and rules. I've read them all but have found no indication as to whether a 94 is required or not. Basically you follow the state rules for TN or KY, depending on which side of the wire you're standing on.  I'll check the TWRA listing in the book and see if BSF is in there. If it's not, it should be treated as TN public.

Your right, things are going to be a lot different in Febuary.......but I doubt I'll get much time off between now and then, so, maybe I'll get something out of an early scouting trip!

Yes, it is very steep in most places which would limit where a person could hunt.  I'm headed up there to have a look in the next few days.....Seems several people have posted about harvesting pigs there......

I'm scouting BSF from the 11th to the 13th. I'd like to have an idea of how many people are serious and what type of hunting they prefer.

Count me in.  I prefer ground hunting, those ridges are high enough without being in a tree.........We need to set the date so everyone can schedule it!
