Author Topic: Help with vertical stringing with 30-30AI Carbine (Read 532 times)

Have tried washers, tape, different torgue on mounting screw. All I do is chase it around, all vertical, this thing moves only an 1/8th or so right or left but up to six inches up and down. I have removed the forearm and the stringing is down to about an inch. Frame to barrel pin is pretty tight.
has done this with two different scopes.
This is the 21 inch carbine barrel. Any body had similiar problems and what did you do to solve them?

I have the 30-30AI in a 24" barrel from the T/C Custom shop, on my Contender. I have not experienced any of this behavior. I have gotten good groups and some great groups from 125g, 135g and 150g bullets.

With good meaning, perhaps your handloads could use a little more consistency or variation. I size my cases using my Lee 30-30AI die set. I have gotten good groups from IMR 3031 and 4198 powders, Ballistic Tip and "X" bullets.

I would look closely at the seating depth!

My handloads consistently produce 1/2 to 3/4" groups in a super 14 AI.

I failed to point out in my earlier post that my barrel and forearm has only one screw and I am wondering if this is a serious detriment?

Have you tried O-rings? When you tried the other quick fixes, did you check to make sure the forend was still not in contact with the barrel. I have a custom stock on my encore and the forend was so tight that even with O-rings it toched the barrel. Your thoughts may be on track with the # or screws in the forend.

I Shoot 4 break action rifles/pistols and have found that the free floating of the forend makes a difference but your single screw for the forend forces me to suggest that you place you front rest on the action just infront of the trigger gaurd and not touching the for end and then try using a sand bags stacked so the top 2 will act like a cradle for the forend . see if one of these help.

Thanks for the suggestions. I took it upon myself to cut a new dovetail forend fastner and and install the second screw. I used alum foil to build up and float the barrel.
Groups came down from 5- 6" vertical to about 1 1/2 -2" vertical, quite an improvement. Still needs help though as all groups are totally vertical varying only 1/2" or so from the vertical. Guess I will try the stainless washer spacer next, to totally isolate the barrel from the forend.

Thompson has a excellent reputation of standing behind their product, If you put a resonable effort into solving this yourself and cannot they should take care of you.

I have had the same problem w/ a foxridge 30-06 barrel. What I have learned so far is that I have to shoot from a cold barrel. It will group at under an inch going about it this way. If I try to get of more than 2 shots in a row it starts to string. I really don't like that it acts this way however. Forearm has been worked on and washers installed.
