7mm-08 for Elk?
« on: September 28, 2004, 09:07:22 AM »
Hello and thanks in advance for you input.  I was in the KC Cabella's last week and got to talking to one of their sales folks about a used Kimber 7mm-08 that they had.  We got to talking about elk and his opinion was that the 7mm-08 with a 160-170 grain bullet would be adequate for elk in the 250 yard and under arena.  Any thoughts on this?

Thanks for your input.

Sincerely,

OUrabmen

I would certainly agree and think the Nosler PT in 150 grains or the Hornady Interbond in 154 grains would also. I'd likely use a bonded or partition style bullet for insurance but doubt it really required.

ourabmen,

I agree completely with Graybeard.  You do your part and the 7mm-08 will do it's part.  Lawdog

It would work, especially in light magnum loads.

:D I agree also. It's bullet placement that is more important than the size or power of the round. At that I think the 7mm08 is plenty powerful.

People tend to become subject to a loss of reason when they see a 6 point bull trotting towards the timber line 250 yards out.  Many will take the shot because you don't see a six point bull 250 yards out every hunting trip.  Best of luck if they think a 150 grain 7 mm non-magnum bullet will make a clean kill on an 800 to 1,000 pound animal at that distance with a raking shot.

Yes it would and a fine one at that. Just hit him were you are supposed to and keep the range reasonable. 7-08 is a awsome caliber in my opinion.  :D
Good shoot'n

My son shot a 5x5 bull last year with a 7-08 using Winchester 140 gr Fail Safe factory loads at about 150 yds....ran 40 yds and fell over dead.  Quartering away shot.  It worked well in this instance.
