factory sst hvy barrel boyd lam stocks, 180 ballistic,180 accubond165 fail safe.   all eratic and confusing. what kind of tension should i have on my forend screws? and do i need to rest it at the same point on the forend every time? will it get better with more shooting and cleaning? are detachable mounts too unreliable for the 300?

any help would be great

Thanks  Tim

you can usualy get small teflon or hard rubber washers at most hardware stores that work very good for free floating the barrel.  I have found this to help accuracy out a lot in a couple of barrels of mine.   Also check your base and rings, some locktite can really make a big difference.  Those light encores in the heavy calibers are hard on scopes, rings and bases.  What kind of scope are you using and is it of known dependability?  Things to think about.

I also have the boyds laminate butt stock on my rifle.  I also have a VVGC forend with hanger bar.  With a 24" barrel, this setup seemed very heavy to me.  Also the barrel end of the gun seemed too light for proper balance.  This has nothing to do with your irratic grouping issue, however if you are interested in a slightly lighter weight rig, I have a tip for you.  If you take off the recoil pad, you will see that the boyd's buttstock is a solid peice of laminate.  The laminate is much heavier than either the synthetic stock or even regular walnut.  Between the holes for the recoil pad screws,  There is plenty of room to remove some wood to lighten the weight.  I took a 3/4" spade bit and drilled three holes into the stock from the recoil pad end of the stock.  The edges of the holes slightly overlapped.  I ended up with a cavity that was about 1.75" to 2" wide and 5.5" deep.  This removed enough weight to lighten the stock and improve the balance.  Just make sure to leave the wood in the area of the recoil pad screws.  Also take your time and be sure to drill straight!
