20 ga youth pardner revisited....
« on: September 29, 2004, 09:52:53 AM »
posted last week how i have a youth Pardner in 20 ga that i want my 10 yr old daughter to be able to use in Ohio's Youth deer (firearms) season....
got some good advice here.
here is what i did.....
home grown porting job.....12 - 5/32" holes drilled into last 4" of the barrel
one pound of shot (approx) added to the stock bolt hole
stock pad to decrease the drop on the comb of the stock
tru-glo front sight (red, about 2" long) in lieu of bead sight
===========================================
now if only i can find some reduced recoil 20 ga slugs......going by the numbers , Rem should be the lowest, but only marginally so (5/8 oz slug at 1580 fps....the others are all 3/4 oz)...if i reloaded id whip up a batch of black powder/Pyrodex loads...that would keep the vel down around 1100 fps or so...

Heavy Field Short Magnum 20 / 2¾”
Weight:  1 oz.
Barrel:  all types
Range: up to 60 yards
Game:  deer sized

Original BRENNEKE Slug “Emerald” with patented plastic wad
one of the heaviest 20 gauge slugs on the market

flat trajectory
very powerful
moderate recoil
superb knockdown power
good accuracy

Distance
(yards) Velocity
(feet/sec.) Energy
(ft. lbs.) Bullet path
(inch)
Muzzle  1392 1890 - 2.0
25 1209 1431 - 0.4
50 1110 1201 + 1.6
75 950 884 - 0.2
100 881 761 - 2.8

Until I figured the recoil displayed below thought this would be a slug to consider but maybe not.

6lb 20ga Shotgun -2 3/4" Load - Recoil Energy - Recoil Velocity

Remington 5/8oz (275gr) slug 1580fps - Recoil 16.09ft/lbs 13.14fps
Other Brands 3/4oz (325gr) slug 1600fps - Recoil 21.46ft/lbs 15.18fps
Brenneke 1oz (438gr) slug 1392fps - Recoil 27.93ft/lbs 17.31fps

I couldn't find any one making reduced recoil 20ga slug loads.  Looks like the Remingtons would be the way to go.

Really interested in hearing how it shoots after your modifications.  Keep us posted!  8)

If you can find them in your area FIOCCHI use to make a reduce recoil slug in 20 ga. aero tip 7/8 oz slug with attached wad. They are kinda hard to find in my area.  Good luck hope this helps.

Checked FIOCCHI website the only reduced recoil slug listed is the 12ga. The slug you mention is running about 1650fps according to there data.
