weatherby 270 ammo
« on: September 29, 2004, 02:14:38 PM »
I have a encore chambered for the weatherby 270 mag, What would be a good bullet choice for this round? My shots will be from 30 to 100 yards most of the time. I will be useing factory weatherby ammo, I dont reload, I was thinking about the barnes x in 140 gr. or the 140 gr. ballistic tip. I like to see big holes in those bucks.

shootdonniebrook,

Stick with the Barnes bullets or at the very least use Nosler Partitions.  Stay away from Ballistic Tips completely with the .270 Weatherby Magnum.  But if you don't plan on eating any of the deer then go ahead and blow them up with Ballistic Tips.  Ballistic Tips were not built to work at the velocities the Weatherby has.  Lawdog

I agree with Lawdog. Ballistic Tips, in my experience, have fragmented on the inbound ribs at 2,850 or so fps.
