J.P. Sauer & Sohn/Hawes question
« on: September 29, 2004, 03:07:49 PM »
My first single action revolver, actually a long gun collector so I am new to the area of collecting and shooting.

I recently purchased a Western sixshooter. Info on barrel is as follows:

Hawes Firearms Co.
los angeles california.
made in western germany by
J.P. Sauer & Sohn.
S/N is 2/102xx

S/N on barrel matches receiver. It is blued with pearl handles and chambered in .22mag. I am trying to find out the year this was manufactured and what the going rate for one of these are. Also is the company still around? I cant find anything on Hawes Firearms Co. Any info would be appreciated.

Kev

Kev, I see this is your first post so let me welcome you to GBO.
The hawes Firearms was first manufactured by J. P. Sauer & Sohn in Germany. At one time they had a shop in Van Nuys Ca. You didn't say what caliber you Hawes was. I know the 22s go for any where from 60 to 150 dollars depenging on the condition. There never was much intrest amongst most of the serious shooters. As a matter of fact i  spent the morning working on one and never did get the thing working right.
Hope this little bit of info helps. Stay safe.........Joe.........

Kev,
Sorry, I missed seing the 22 mag. That would up the price a little. If the gun hasn't been hammered to much it would make a good plinker.
Have a good one...........Joe........

a .22 hawes was also my first single action it wanted to bind when cocking and i didnt know anything about them. I ended up giving it to my brother in law who still has it and has gotten it to work fine. Hes put alot of rounds through it and loves it. Its a good accurate gun. Like was said there isnt much collectors interest in them and they can be picked up pretty cheaply.

To add to the above posts...

Hawes was in-fact the importer for JP Sauer and Sohn, (later became Sig-Sauer).
They made decent quality stuff but never flourished on the market.
Grab them when you can, they will never make you a millionaire, but will be able to shoot like one!

I got a Marshall .357 some years ago. My Son thought it looked neat and I figured it would make a decent plinker for him when he grew up. The Owner practically gave it to me since it had a broken rear sight. I Repaired it myself and took it to the range for kicks. I was amazed at the groups I got with the thing!!!! It shoots as tight as my Python, sometimes better.

A well spent $125!!!!!!   :)

Parts are available through Numrich at e-gunparts.com

Hawes sold two 22 frame size guns. One was the 3/4 scale deputy and the other was built on the 45 cal. frame and called the Marshall series. They came in differant finishes from all blue to nickel plate and even case hardend frame model and combinations of blue frame with nickel cyl. fixed sight and adjustable sight models.  I have a full size Texas Marshall in 22cal. It shoots as good as any of my S&W's or Colts. Up until I seen Loyed Smale's replie to your post I never heard one bad thing about these revolvers. Most people that have them hang on to them. BTW, You being new to handguning, you'll notice that you fire alot more rounds while plinking with a handgun than you do with a rifle  If I were you I would try to get a 22 long rifle cyl for your gun so you could have a great gun that's (cheap to shoot.) Have fun with that gun ,it's a good one!--Willy
