Sight screw to fill hole in Savage 99
« on: September 30, 2004, 05:43:03 AM »
I have a 99 from which both sights have been removed. Thats fine with me as I have it scoped. However I do not like the open hole at the muzzle or the open dovetail slot ahead of the receiver. Where can I obtain pieces to fill the voids? Thanks. POW

A local gunshop would likely be the easiest but I am not familar with your area.  Barring that Brownells has dovetail slot filler blanks and filler screws.  I usually make the slot fillers from broken sights in the junk drawer and some junk lots I've bought on EBay.  The fillers screws usually accumulate around here from receiver plugs removed when mounting scopes although I think I do have an assortment around here somewhere..

Thanks guys but try to remember I live in a remote location. There are no local gun stores. gunsmiths or anything like that. I am looking for online resourses for these items.
At least I have learned the thread diameter and pitch so now perhaps I can find what will work. Cheers. POW

The thread diameters used in the gun trade are almost never found at hardware stores.  Online sourses like Brownells and Midway usually sell wholesale(especially screws) and one really doesn't need that many..  Brownells and Midway both have online stores..  The M99 should have been tapped for a receiver sight and the plugs there can be taken out and tried to be certain the sizes are correct.  A lot of things happen to a rifle over the years.
