Shooting Different Brands of Ammo.
« on: September 30, 2004, 09:42:47 AM »
Back even just a few years ago most of us I think shot what ever 22 ammo we had on hand or what we could buy on sale and took the average groups as the best the gun could do. Target ammo was not that available and most guys went for hollow points and faster ammo for hunting. Now we know you should shoot every brand you can get your hands on to see what your 22 likes. What a difference and new world that development brought! Now I am not saying every 22 will shoot like a target rifle doing this but a lot that you thought shot average or poor groups may shoot a lot better with ammo the gun prefers. For those who never done this you may be supprised. Of course if the gun has been neglected or the bore damaged this probably will not help any. also a bad crown will not make any ammo shoot good. Some guns will shoot just average no matter what ammo it likes but a lot of them may supprise you. It pays to check it out your average gun may turn into a tack driver with ammo it likes. Got a 22 you never did this with it may pay to try it.  I think unless a 22 is damaged most can shoot good groups due to the inherent accuracy of the round and the condition of the 22 used. New guns after they are broke in should shoot great groups with ammo they like if the gun has a good barrel. I think the gun companies today pay more attention to accuracy then they used to as a average as some of the older guns always shot excellent and some of course never did or so you thought maybe the different ammo will cure that or at least give you better accuracy than you had before.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Ammo difference...

I shot some TNT'S in my .17HMR and they were somewhat erratic, then shot the V-max bullet in both Remington and Hornady, Bingo!  Groups tightened right up.  The only thing I think is there are such small sizes and amounts of powder or other small differences they are amplified. Just my opinion. Now I hope I have good luck with the 20gr. Hornadys.  They really change the game with their penetration.  Turns it into a small, big boy gun if you know what I mean.  Buckfever

The first time I shot TNT's out of my 22 mag I was not impressed with the groups at 50 yards ammo shot before was getting under a inch the TNT's were around 2  to 2.5 inches. The next time I shot some (same box) they seemed to group better but still not tack drivers. I think the large hollow point makes them not as accurate but from what I hear they really do the damage if you can hit what you are shooting at. My gun tolerates them enough they should work ok for varmints but not a accuracy round in my gun yet I have read some guns like them real well. Just goes to show you have to shoot every thing to see what they like best. Jim

I tried the TNTs Sunday in my Savage 17HMR.  The group was tripple the size I expect.  Further the rounds hung up in the action, not wanting to cleanly load.  I put in V-MAX back in and the problems went away.  I guess I can't use them in the Savage.  I haven't tried them in my Contender yet.  I have a couple of boxes yet and would like to use them.  I hope the Contender likes them.

In my 17 HMR 14" Contender barrel, the TNT shoot way worse than the others.  I have been shooting the new 20gr XTP and it shoots better than anything else in mine.

I myself can only say I had the exact same experience using the TNTs in my M77/17.  My groups averaged 3/4-1 1/2in. at 100 yds. with the V-Max loads (depending on the wind of course).  Once I tried the TNTs, they opened to around 2-2 1/2 inches afer that.  Went back to V-Max and they are back to around 1 or so inches.  I am anxious to try the 20 grainers soon, if I can find them...  Patriot

20gr .17HMR XTP

Shot the Hornady's 20gr XTP.  They grouped within a click of the V-Max 17gr.  This was awesome because I can use them interchangeable for Varmints.  I have 2-clips one with V-max for small varmints and the others for some what larger.  Both bullets grouped about the same.  Ain't life grand!    Buckfever
