Off topic but important scope question
« on: September 30, 2004, 11:52:28 AM »
Okay setting up one of my Remington 700 ADL's in .223 Rem and I have been wanting a nice varment scope.  My question, Is it better for duplex cross hairs or mil-dot.

Wanting to get a 6.5x24x42 or a 6.5x32x42

I guess that's a matter of choice.  I prefer duplex scopes and adjust my holdover at the juncture of the heavy/light reticle.

The mil-dot and similar scopes are too busy for me to keep track of.

Again, I think this will be a personal thing.

By the way, for lower priced scopes, I like the Simmons 44Mag but LOVE the Simmons Aetec.

Lots of good scopes out there.  One of the best for the money in my opinion is the Simmons ATV.  This is a 4.5-14x40 made in the Philippines.  Take a look at one if you can find one.  I have bought two off ebay for $65 to $80.  Several of the big retailers, like Natchez and Midway have them also.

handirifle

I use scopes depending on the rifle and it's use.  I have a Ultra SB-2 in 45-70 that has a nice laminated stock.  Danged cheek peace sits too high, to not use a scope.  I would have prefered not to use a scope but had too, so I scoped that one with a Tasco 3x9x40mm and it is a rag hole shooter for the dark woods.

Handirifle I never thought I would own a .223 Remington either but now own one because of Preditors and Varments.  I found some places that I can hunt gophers in the Spring but have to stay along the fence lines so the shots will be farther out than I want to use a .22 LR for and didn't want to use a 45-70 or the 45-90 for either.

Well on a hair I decided to get me this Remington 700 ADL in .223 Rem because the price WAS right.  BTW guys Wal-Mart has Remington 700 ADL's in .223 and 22-250 while supplies last for $300.00 and I got the additional 10% discount on top.

I did find a good price on a Simmons Aetec in 2.8-10x44 Truplex at the www.theopticzone.com that I may order for the Remington.

So now after hunting season, I'm gonna send in my Ultra to have a .223 Rem BB, .243 BB and .308 BB added to the list of calibers.  I just wish my Remington had a BB on it for the weight.

Again thanks
Jon

Sounds like ya gotta good deal.

Just came from the range this morning and it seems my Ultra 223 is starting to like everything I feed it.   Got very good groups with 50gr Hornady Vmax, no matter what the charge.  Using H335.

Also got my '06 Savage (main reason for going) shooting two in one hole and the third about an inch out.  That'll do for elk I suppose.  Hopefully in two weeks I'll find out. :-)

Goor luck with the 223, they are a blast to shoot.  What is the twist rate?

another fan of that Aetec scope.

great price.

before you order, ask them if it comes with the 3" sun shade, like it does from SWFA or EABCO for 129 with the shade.

if the shade matters to you.  FYI.

There is nothing worse than looking thru your scope when the target is west and the sun is setting

The 3" sun shade would be nice.  8)
