need .22 advice for good quality silo rifle, legal rifle?
« on: September 30, 2004, 05:16:21 PM »
Hi Guys,  I saw a EAA/Izhmash CM2 rifle in a local shop.  it felt really nice and i loved the sights on it.  i'm not sure its legal for use though.

I know its a youth rifle.  1st off, is it strange for a 24 year old to use a rifle like this?  Is it even legal for silo use?
In recommending a rifle, please keep in mind that i enjoy open sights (the peep holes are cool)  I though of a 10/22 w/target barrel but have only found scoped.  Thanks for your help!!

Hi Chewie,

I don't know the dimensions of that particular rifle but it will definitely fall in to the standard rifle class.  dimensional restrictions for the standard class require that the forearm be no deeper than 2.25" from the center of the bore to the bottom of the forearm.

I also don't know if you have been shooting this game for awhile or not so if you have, please forgive the following advice.  I like shooting open sights on ocassion as well.  If I had an open sight rifle at the moment I would probably drag it to the range every now and again just to humiliate myself.  I wouldn't, however, go out and buy an open sight rifle specifically for this game.  There aren't enough matches where there is an open sights class and you will find it extremely challenging (impossible) to be competitive against scoped rifles.  I am sure the rifle you have pointed out has a sight/scope dovetail so i'm not suggesting that you don't pick one up...  just that you might want to give a scope a try.

Without a doubt you'd be in the standard class.  If your looking for an affordable hunter class rifle the CZ 452 line is great.  Not sure what they are up to now but I got mine for under $300.

Open sights are awesome and as long as your competing against yourself go for it and have fun.  I'm lucky, up here in the Northeast there are plenty of matches to go to.  We could always use more but there are enough to keep ya busy and keep the other half happy.

I shoot BPCR as well so iron sights that can come close to my tang mounted peep sight on my single shot work well for practice.  I just picked up an old H&R Reising model 65 that I plan on using if its accurate enough and I hope it is!  If I hit a few I'll be tickled to death and its great offhand practice for those chickens at 200 yards!
