10" 7mm08?
« on: October 04, 2004, 08:20:44 AM »
I have a chance to buy a 10" 7mm08 bbl fairly cheap.  Anyone have any experience with one or something similar?  It seems that 10" is way too short for that cal.  What do you guys think?

I think it is way to short!  It will have a lot of flash and bang, but no oomph!

There's a reason it's cheap and jhalcott hit it on the head!
I would avoid it.

A few years back I worked with a Fox Ridge Outfitters 12" 7mm-08 Encore for a friend. I ended up with a couple of really accurate loads, but they were not overly fun to shoot (yep lots of muzzle blast and flash, with fairly heavy recoil). I loaded both 120gr. & 140gr. Nosler Ballistics Tips with H-4895. Like stated, accuracy was great, but the average velocity for the 120's was 2399 FPS, and the average velocity for the 140's was 2355 FPS.

My friend still has the gun, but I have not shot it for years. This one was Mag-na-Ported and it still kicked pretty good. I felt a Super 14 in 7-30 Waters would do the same job, have less muzzle flash & blast and do it will less recoil.

my 15" 7-08 does 2800fps with 120gr noslers, and i love the barrel. don't think i'd like a 10"  7-08 all that well. :?  it'd have to be really, really cheap. thats a lot of gun for a 10" barrel.

I'll agree with the other fellas, that isn't much tube for a 7-08.

The 7-08 is my probably my favorite round in a handgun but I don't believe I'd want a 10 incher.......she's sure gonna flash and thump.

About the only use I could see for it would be with heavy cast slugs and a low powder charge for close in work. 10" is really short when it comes to heavy hitting rifle calibers. I have a 10" 7mm TCU and really I'm to the point I think it's too short, well not "too" short but It's better if it's longer.

jhalcott  is absolutely positively correct!!!!! A friend was holding out for the best deal and he found it. 10 in 7-08 brand new for $100. Gun store had it for two years and couldn't seel it so they marked it down. I think he shot factory ammo and paid the Blood God on the first shot. He sent it to Fox Ridge and had them install a brake on it. Some deal! The brake helped a little but I think he sold it.
