Need some help
« on: October 04, 2004, 03:49:01 PM »
I have a winchester m70 stealth varmint push feed in 22-250 with a 26" bull barrel I would like to have it changed to a 20" .221 fireball using the same barrel.
Will the 22-250 bolt face work or is this going to be a problem.
How much should this cost because the only local gunsmith around here is very pricey.
Thank's

Given the .221 Fireball has the same base diameter as the .222, .223 Rem family of cartridges and the .22-250 has the larger diameter base of the 30-06, 308 type cartridges, converting your rifle would be a major chore.  Much better to find an action / rifle with the proper bolt face size and go from there.

Also the magazine would have to be changed to one designed for the smaller 221 as the actions feed characteristics are governed by the magazine..  Way too costly. Why not simply trade for a rifle in 222, 223, or perhaps a CZ 527 in 221.  CZ makes a couple of models in 221 and CZ's are known as good shooting rifles . . . and resonably priced to boot!!
