45-70 Recoil
« on: October 05, 2004, 11:47:18 AM »
Hey  guys just bought a 24" 45-70 barrel for my Encore. What should I expect as far as recoil out of this gun. Ammo I bought is Federal 300 grain.  The only load I have shot out of the encore is the 209x50 muzzleloader barrel and thats not bad at all with 100 gr. triple 7 and 300 grain bullet.            Thanx John

If its a marlin level load its pretty stout. If its a trap door load its no problem. If its a #1 load then get a good grip cause its going to kick!  KN

I'd suggest that you wear a pad between you and the buttplate for the first shot.  It's liable to slap you pretty good.  There's a bit of performance difference with smokless.

jrkrk,

The Federal 300g @ 1,800 fps. is a moderate level load. It is equivalent to the old "Express " loads. A stouter load would be the 405g bullets at 1,800 fps. And stouter still would be the 405g at around 2000 fps. Some of the premium ammo makers are loading 400g+ bullets at 2000+ fps.

These latter loads will loosen your joints.

I just got a 24" 45/70 barrel this  fall too.  It was a handful with the light synthetic stock that I had on it.  I switched to a laminated boyds stock.  The extra wieght really helped tame recoil.

THe federal 300gr loads were very manageable with the wood stock.  I also shot some Buffalo bore 350gr @ 2150fps loads.  They were very stout but not painfull.  I wouldn't want to shoot them with the lighter synthetic stock though.  Also be sure you are holding on tight if using a scope or you might join the ranks of cressent scared brows that can be found discussing big bores at the local gun shop.

The encore with the 45/70 barrel makes a great short to moderate range big game carbine.  I opted to get mine cut down to 18" just to make it more compact.

Just a tip I wanted to throw out to anyone using a big-boomer . . .

While shooting my Encore 209X50 I was wearing shooting glasses and got tapped in the glasses several times, about every other shot.  Had I not been wearing the glasses I'm sure I would have had one of those cuts on my forehead.  I was shooting what I considered a moderate load at 100 gr. Triple 7 loose w/ 300gr. sabot.

I got tapped on the brow with the buffalo bore 350gr load but luckily not enough to draw blood.   It only happened the once, I should have been holding on better, I did start to get a bruiseon my elbow on my right arm from my elbow hitting the shooting table.  They are a lot more fun to shoot standing up than off the bench.

The buffalo bore ammunition says it is good for the t/c Encore right on the box.  350gr JFN @ 2150fps, and the 400gr JRN @ 2000fps.  It also shows these loads for the marlin.  The marlin level loads are really good performance and I don't think I would want to load any hotter than that anyway.

I wouldn't worry too much about the recoil from the 300 gr. factory load at 1800-1900fps from Win., Fed. or Rem., not bad at all, I might compare them to a 12 guage med. load, if that. A few gave some good advice on eye position in relation to the scope( Make sure your scope has close to 4"+ of eye relief and that shouldn't be a problem). The Buffalo Bore loads and other +P handloads are a different bear completely. Very Stout! You'll have a new respect for the ole 45-70. A Simms or Deaccelorator pad might be well worth the money with the +P loads. Good Shooting!
