25/06 Ultra reloading....
« on: October 05, 2004, 01:02:30 PM »
Hello everybody, I am obviously new here and hope to have a pleasant stay on this great site.

Here is some load data I have for you 25 lovers that is giving me consistant 1 inch accuracy at 100 yards using a 75grn Vmax bullet...

Powder: IMR 4350 56.5grns
Primer: CCI
Bullet: Hornady 75grn V-Max BT
Velocity: 3575fps

I shot this load out to 150 yards so far and it is showing to be pretty accurate for me. I can consistantly hit a 2 inch square at that range though that isn't a hard task to accomplish.

I have about 60 some shots through the gun and have yet to have a stuck casing or an FTF. I use a Swift Premier 6-18x44 scope set on 12x for the groups. I was also using BullBag front and sandbag rear.

Powder: IMR 4064 47.7grns
Primer: CCI
Bullet: Hornady 75grn V-Max BT
Velocity: 3500fps

This load didn't shoot too well outta my gun with group averages showing around 2 inches at 100 yards.

Powder: IMR 4895 49grns
Primer: Rem 9
Bullet: Hornady 75grn V-Max BT
Velocity: 3595fps

This laod was the same as load two with groups in the 2 inch range. Two of the bullets would group nicely but then a third would throw the group outta whack.

I also want to say that the first load I mentioned has the same POI as Winchester Ballistic Silvertips 115grn loading. At 150 yards I had a 75er and a 115er touch in a 1/4 inch 2 shot group.

My reloading manual says the 4350 gives better accuracy and that seems to be the truth from my point of view. I am happy with 1 inch groups at 100 yards and if I can improve that in any way I will. But, so far, this is my new g-hog and varmint load aside from Federals 90grn Sierra Varminter(GameKing) which also gave me a 3-shot group of 1 inch at 100 yards. Perhaps some more trial and error will get me under an inch? It's all about finding the right load for YOUR gun, as all guns are different in the taste for ammunition. And with H&Rs sloppy specs on thier guns, one will most likely not be the same as another one.

So, if anybody here has anything to say about thier experiences with the 25 Ultra I would be greatful to hear about them. I believe I already told(via email and PMs) two participants on this site about my gun and gave them some load data to try helping out with accuracy some. Quickdtoo and Fred M.

Good Shootin'

Edit: I forgot to mention about being careful on resizing as sometimes the reloaded shell will stick out of the chamber a little bit causing the latch spring to not engage and making your action open on firing. I got one of these the other day at the range. Hmmm, perhaps Fred M's little secret about the latch spring will help solve this???.......I would imagine it would

:D  Hey there Hildy welcome to the site!!! I've read several articles on reloading the .25-06,and have heard the following to be true. Remington brass/winchester primers/ sierra bullets. You can use any brand bullet you want, but the winchester primers over the other brands shrank the groups in half. If you want to read this for your self go to Steve's reloading pages dot com. This guy had them shooting one inch at 200 yards. Try the winnies they are cheap enough to give a whirl.

Hildy.
The 25-06 like most other 06 type cases are easy to tune, if you have a gun that is reasonably put together.

I have a Ruger#1 in 25-06 that toke very little to tune once I toke the slop out of the forearm. Not so with the 25-06 Ultra which toke considerable effort to make it shoot, and very little had to do with loads.

My favorite powder is H1000 and Reloder 22. The 100 gr bullets is my best performer in both rifles. There don't seem to be too many people using the 25-06 H&R's.  Consistency with hand loads is no pic-nick either with the considerable brass flow into the neck and shoulder.

For the H&R 25-06 I think factory loads are best, then throw away the cases and forget about hand loading unless you happy with squib loads. Fred M.

Hildy:

Don't pay any attention to Fred...........  he's just peed off because he couldn't get his 25-06 to shoot as good as he wanted to for  a long time...not all of the   Handi's are tack drivers...but enough of them are to wring it out and do all the tips and tricks to try to get those 1 hole groups...and some of your groups are pretty darn good so far....a couple of  Handi's tricks to try out......rest the gun further back than you normally do...well behiind the forarm screw...closer to the receiver...and just on a whim...take the Hammer extention off and try it the same way with the same loads......and also...don't let the trigger break...and release it...follow thru all the way till it stops....and if your getting any verticle or horizontal dispersion of your groups...the o-ring trick may cure that little problem...if it does...then great.....

Good Luck with your  25-06...and keep shooting good groups...and let us know how things are progressing for you..

Thanks for the replies fellas

I haven't gotten out to the range lately to shoot more with the 25, but around my house I got to shoot a little. 250 yards at soda bottles. It was great fun though I couldn't see the impacts through the scope. This was not so with my 17HMR. I could watch the 250y impacts throught the scope and it was pretty neat.

Anyhow, I got another box of my best load reloaded, only the overall shell length is a tad shorter. I am a little worried about this being the same as my good load accuracy wise. The only reason it was tried was because that is what a few people told me to try out. We'll see.

As for the Win primers, I will pick up some next time I get out shopping for reloading accessories. That will be soon as I have to get another box of V-Maxes

I am reading all of these simple ways to 'better' accuracy. I always hold the trigger in fully until the gun breaks. And the rest point is another thing I will try out. I was going to try it at the range, but my sandbags wouldn't allow it.

Anyhow, I will take these suggestions into great consideration to try to get under an inch. Perhaps just shooting a few more will get to this point? After all, one group will never show the over-all accuracy potential of a gun or load.

Concerning the overall length of my reloaded shell...will that have an affect on accuracy?

Thanks and Good Shootn'

Hildy

Remove the sling swivel studs from the rifle on both ends so they don't affect your rifle during recoil.

Stay away from caffeine before shooting -- at least if you get shaky like me.

So far you're doing rather well, and my money is on you to get it even further developed as you continue to work with this rifle.

Good luck.
