The Encore 260, 24 inch barrle is just a few weeks away, I put the scope away today and bought dies for it.
Before I start buying bullets, powder and such I was wondering if any of you 260 owners would give me some of yur favorite loads to start with for deer and varmits( yute to PD).
be safe and god bless

Congratulations Tripper! You must be excited.

I have a 15" .260 bbl. I just started shooting. Barely got past initial scope sight in and shooting some rounds to develop a feel for 100 yd handgunning. is your bbl. tight chambered (bullberry etc?). If it is be careful about loads. Mine is a Bullberry, I have started to hit high pressure at the 2/3 point betwen min / max loads from manuals.

Shot so far:

Initial loads, scope sight in: 100 gr sierra hp. 31 / 35 gr h4895 (70%/80% load). Impressed with accuracy of these light loads.

Hunting loads:
Speer 120 gr hot cor. 36.5 gr. Varget.
Nosler 120 gr BT 36.5 gr RL15.

Both loads pretty accurate. I only had 1 weekend to develop a load in time for a SC deer hunt, I won't have any time until after the November KY season either. Next spring will fine tune.

Other bullets in inventory to try: sierra 107 matchking, hornady 95gr vmax, hornady 129 gr spire point.

I just picked up a can of Hogdgon benchmark to try next season. Hogdgon data shows the best velocity matching same pressure as other leading powders, looks promising partcularly for lighter bullets.

good luck Mirage.

I had a 24" barrel from T/C (made back when they were a standard offering) that I tested with about 12 different bullets and all available factory loads.  After testing for accuracy, penetration, and long-range expansion, my favorite all-around hunting bullet for the 260 is the 125 grain Nosler Partition, closely followed by the Hornady 129 grain.  I would avoid the 140 grain Nosler Partition, as my samples didn't expand evenly at long range.  They tumbled and lost their rear cores, failing to drive very deep.  They're perhaps better suited to 6.5-06 and larger cases.

The Hornady 160 grain round noses work great in the 260.  Velocity isn't much to brag on, but it doesn't have to be.

The Nosler 100 grain Partition is good for young shooters that want to hunt deer.  It will kick like a .243.

For varmints, as long as you don't want the hide, I like the Speer 90 grain TNT.  Muzzle velocity can easily surpass 3200 fps with several powders, and performance is pretty spectacular.

H4350 is my favorite powder for most bullet weights, as it gives good velocity and doesn't react much to changes in temperature.

I got to get loading for mine also. I agree with Leverfan though. I talked with other users of the 260, and the majority(4 out of 5) said, H4350 was the goto powder. Which is a good thing for me, as I have 3 other rifles that are at their best with it.

Thanks for the info. guys.  I had noticed in the data I had collected that the 4350 did give some of the best vol.
The Hodgdon414 seems to  move the 260 right along to but with a little more psi.

Out of all my deer rifles I like my Encore .260 standard rifle barrel the best. For deer hunting my favorite load is the 125 gr. Nosler partition with Rem 9 1/2 primer over 49.5 gr. of H-1000 with an OAL of 2.790.
The 4350 powders and IMR 4064 would also be fine. I started with H-1000 on a recommendation of an old re-loader and Hodgdon's manual and it worked out. I've also used Hornady 120's, 129's and 140's but have had super results on lung shot deer from 80 to 368 yards with the 125's.
