Author Topic: 7mm TCU vs 300-221 (Read 995 times)

I am looking at setting up a rifle for when my little girl starts shooting deer. I want to get something with light recoil but enough oomph to get the job done. Looking at the two cartridges side by side I would have thought that the TCU would outdo the whisper, but the reloading books give the edge to the 300. I already have a 21" barrel in 7 TCU and I am looking for an excuse to get another barrel in 300-221. What do you think? Is there more recoil with the 300 and is it worth the extra knock down? Another option would be to get an upper receiver in 300-221 for my AR15, with the thought of the semiauto taking some of the recoil out.

Don't do it. Go with the 7 TCU or better yet a 6.5 TCU.

I have a carbine barrel, a 10" pistol barrel, and a 16" upper for my AR in 300Whisper. It really is a great cartridge. Recoil is VERY mild. All three barrels a very accurate. I load 18.3gr of H110 behind a 130gr Hornady Single Shot Pistol bullet. If you don't want to reload, factory ammo is available from Cor-Bon in 125gr and 150gr. I also have some 110gr bullets loaded for "non-deer" use. I will readily admit, though, that I have no experience with the 7mm TCU. I would probably like it as well.
Go ahead and get the 300, if you don't like it for some reason, you should have no problems selling it on this site.

If you really want a 30 caliber get a 30 Herrett.

I had a 300 whisper It was just barely ok. I found no reason to keep it so I sold it. I much prefer the TCU calibers. If you get a whisper barrel I predict you'll end up selling it.

I am just curious, why the 6.5 TCU? I have the 6mm tcu, and it shoots great but seems too light for deer. Why the 6.5 over the 7mm? Also, why was the 300 barely adequate?

The 6.5 has better ballistics than the 7 TCU but still can shoot 120 or 140 gr bullets. The Whisper has a real rainbow trajectory. The 30 herrett is better.

i have used the 7-tcu i na 10" as well as the 21 and found if to be OK for the large bodied deer heer in ND. Lite recoil and proper bullet placement is the main factor in hunting
