Browning bar Rifle barrel

hello I just got this browning bar rifle from another person and I didnt notice before but it seems to be flaking or or like coming off the barrel does anyone know what this is the rest of the rifle is nice including the bore could the heat of shooting it cause this any help would be helpful thanks.

Without looking at it it's diffcult to be certain but I'd guess it's the blue flaking.  Blueing is just a controled type of rust and if packed on deeply it is possible that the layer of 'blue' can actually flake off.  What happens is the ferric oxide(blue/black rust) that makes up the blue has a pore and rust begins to form under the black coating.  It forces the ferric oxide to pop off and a flake is lost.  I use Brownells OxphoBlue to kill the ferris oxide(red rust) that is causing the black to pop off.  Follow the directions on the OxphoBlue bottle..
