Ok - I have decided to order a 45/7 and I need suggestions
« on: October 08, 2004, 05:31:33 AM »
on reloading options.

Anyone want to share their pet loads for me to get an idea of where to start. I am thinking about sticking to MEDIUM level loads with a 300 to 405 gr. bullet.

Also, full length sizing? or neck sizing?

Best powder suggestion for and NEF? I am partial to IMR powders at the moment, but I can be convinced otherwise.

I have read a lot in the last few weeks, but still have much to learn.

Thanks in advance,
Jerry

Great choice there, Jerry.  I"ve been shooting the NEF 45/70 for 13 yrs(and 22 deer so far) now and in mine it likes IMR 4198 for the 300 grain bullets of any variety.  What load you adopt will of course depend on your shooting conditions/game, I reckon. The  top load I could use comfortably(not the top load I tried) was 51.2 grs of IMR4198/300 gr JHP of any variety/ Winchester cases/Rem 9 1/2 primers for 2173 fps.  It's the high end Marlin load in my Hornady Manual.  Developed 28 ftlb of recoil at 15 fps and over 3000 ftlb of energy.  Actually for my woods hunting for these big PA whitetails in the close woods I hunt in, I ended up dropping down to 42.5 grs of 4198 for around 1840 fps.  Comfortable load to shoot and killed them deer just as dead without the bloodshot meat I was getting from the higher velocity loads.  This year I"m using the Speer 400 gr FP behind 44 Gr of Reloader 7 for what a friend of mine who shoots the load in his NEF says cronographs at 1750 fps.  Kicks like a mule from the bench, but not bad from "hunting" positions.  That soft bullet is supposed to work really well on deer, from what I hear.  By the way, I neck size my brass, and don't crimp. All the 300 grain loads I tried grouped into an inch or less at 100, as does the 400 gr.  The ol' 45 is just a naturally accurate cartridge.

Jerry, here's a previous thread that you may have already seen. I've been there done the same as you with the .45-70 questions a couple months ago. There are a bunch of loads recommended that are mild to wild. Currently my .45-70 is sighted in with 28grn of 2400/350grn Hornady RN. It also shoots to the same POI with 51.5grn of IMR 3031/300gr Rem HP. ~2" @100yds. I'm now considering a load that will shoot a bit flatter to 200yds using the 300gr Nosler PP partition at ~2200fps. I've got the laminated stock hole filled with lead and a Sims Limbsaver recoil pad installed, recoil with the above mild loads is a pussycat, even from the bench. I'm sure that if you fine tune the mild loads, you'll end up with a good "squirrel rifle".  hth,   Tim

Congrats on the 45-70

If you have the time for a little load developement...take a look at the Speer 300 grain Uni-Core...as well as the 300 grain Nosler Partiton...you can download Speers supplemental data atwww.speer-bullets.com and you'll have to work a-bit using the Nosletr loading...my favorite powder for the 45-70 is Hodgdons extream powders( H4198)...it isn'tt temp sensative and it gives excellent results on the 300 grainers...and on the 405 grainers as well...you can also give Coyote Hunter over on the Marlin Lever Action forum a shout he has worked up some really good loads with the Speer...and supposedly they will hold together very nicely...as for me...the Nosler at 2200-2300 fps...gets the nod...works like a champ for anything I'll be hunting for a-while...

Good Luck

Jerry, I like my loads a good bit milder than most of the suggestions you have had so far and I don't like spending money on jacketed bullets. I'll agree with several others that 4198 is a good powder choice, but I'd suggest 31 grains of it under a cast 405 at least .459 in diameter. You can buy the Lee 459-405-HB mould for about the price of a hundred jacketed bullets and shoot forever on scrounged lead.

300 gr Hornady HP/XTP with 55 grs H4198 and CCI Large rifle primers. Grouping very well. Remington Brass but I will be shooting some winchester brass next time out.

I tried Sierra 300 gr HP's and got nowhere near as good results.

MY favorite medium power 45-70 load is a Hornady 350 grain RNFP bullet behind 28.0 grains of 2400. Accurate, sweet shooting and easy on the shoulder, tough on game....<><....

i seem to remember the lyman 420 grain flat nose using wheel weights sized to somewhere around .458" ahead of 8 grains of unique as being a great plinking round.

you probably dont even have to size them. and i always use a minimum or no crimp so the shells last forever.

a small dacron wad over the powder will also give you a bit more zing.

Hunting load (whitetail) for .45=70

My favorite so far is 53 grs. Varget set off with CCI BenchRest LRPs pushing a cast Lyman 320 gr HP.  Travels right at 1780 fps.  Recoil is tolerable for bench shooting, and it'll make a one holer at 50 yds if you hold it right.  ;)    There are many good loads for this caliber.  It is more fun than a basket of speckled puppies.
