What's the longest shot anyone in this forum has taken with a 30-30 on deer size game and what would be your limit if you had to take a long shot?

Also, same question but with a 45/70 on deer or elk?

The longest shot I ever took on a whitetail with a 30-30 was around 200 yards using a 336 and a 2x-7x 32mm Nikon....I have heard MANY stories of people killing deer out to 400 yards with a 30-30 but I would never attempt it myself....a lot of folks that hunt with the 30-30 load their own up and use "other than 30-30" bullets and have "roughly" the same trajectory of a .308, although you can only load one in the magazine at a time, which gives you one shot and a follow up if needed.

Around 200 yards for me too. The 30-30 will kill deer cleanly farther than that by a good bit, but I only hunt with open sighted lever actions, so about the 200 yard mark is where I draw the line no matter what the caliber on deer.

I'd say a good accurate 30-30 with a decent scope would be able to kill deer cleanly up to around 250-300 yards, but that's not what the rifle or caliber is designed for.

With my eyes and a Williams peep site just a shade over 125 yds ought
to be max.

for me, the lngest shot I've taken a deer is about 90 yards.
the farthest I will go out for a deer is 150. Some people can
shoot better than that, thats my limit.

I've taken deer with both the 30-30 and the 45-70.

The fartherest deer taken with the 30-30 was a doe, standing about 60 yds away and I took her with one shot through the vitals from my 1965 iron-sighted M94 Win. She ran about 100 yds. after the hit.

With my Handi 45-70, I have taken three deer up close and the fartherest one was about 50 yds. away. All three dropped in their tracks.

I like both cartridges!

I have not shot a deer with the 30-30.....yet, but I have shot them with the 38/55, 35 Rem, 444, and 45-70. The longest with the 35 Rem at about 200 yards. Would not think twice about it with the 30-30. That 170 gr bullet at 200 will do the job.

took my 20 year old and 18 year old to the range last saturday for practice and sight in.. notified them by thier shooting results that they are able to shoot deer in kneeling or sitting position to 50 yards.. .. that goes for you also my friend put a paper plate out at 50 yards take 3-5 shots and if they all hit kneeling move it out to 100 and etc.. it takes a lot of practice and gun fitting, position study, sling positioning etc etc,, to get over 100 yards accuracy in the field..the lighter the gun the harder to shoot.. dave.

For field shooting. serious consideration should be given to the squat position. It can be assumed as quickly as off hand. It has the benefit of increased steadiness because both elbows are supported inside both knees. It is optimally used with the speed slings either the CW or the Ching.

152 yards...45-70...300 grain Nosler partition...2288fps...deer went a few yards and piled up head first into a log...good size hole in...even better one coming out...perfect quartering away shot...
