Reforming Cases
« on: October 08, 2004, 04:26:41 PM »
I'm no great shakes at this project. I have created .33 Winchester cases from 45-70 cases that stayed together and looked pretty good too. I just bought my first adventure into the BPCR game; a 40-65. I reformed some cases with some virgin WW cases and got 49 good ones from a bag of 50. I also have a bag of 50 Starline 45-70 cases. I tried to reform some of these and wow, what a difference in hardness. I'd hate to try  reforming these guys on a lighter duty press than my old Hollywood. Is this just my experience with a small lot, or are all of you leaving Starline alone for reforming? Thanks

Reforming brass..........

bumble,

My experience with (re) forming Starline .45-70 brass to .40-65 somewhat mirrors your implied difficulties.

Have found that trying to form in one sweep of the reloading press handle is an exercise in futility.  After trying Hornady One Shot, which usually works well, and finding it lacking, then decided to use the old standby of LeClair Forming die wax.   It too resisted the "one sweep of the press handle" to accomplish the mission (RCBS Rock Chucker).

Final and with favorable results were accomplished with plain ole lanolin and adjusting the size die to accomplish the mission in three separate operations.  Two different thicknesses of spacer washers were used prior to the size die being in the "full length sized" posetion.

Hope this helps,

I have talked about 40/65 brass with Starline several times. They say they
also lose a lot 40/65 brass when forming it. Federal brass is also tough to form 40/65 without making 3 separate passes.
