Sorry for the delayed response.
As for what a 338 excaliber costs, I don't know. I try to forget the monetary details on such purchases.
I had listed mine with the 3-12x56 Zeiss Illuminated reticle&mounts for something like 1900 including the dies. It didn't sell as several people were interested, but concerned with the availability of ammunition.
I had planned to hunt elk. Yes packing this rifle up and down at 10k to 11k elevation is a work out. I live and work out (rugby/bike/run) at 7,500 ft so its not to bad for me. Additionally, I had hunted antelope with the 200gr ballistic tips in Colorado. Recently I've been using a 270wea (ruger #1) on antelope with awesome results, and a 338win (win mod 70) on elk. Hence the rifle is presently just sitting.
Its a long range tool for sure. I wouldn't carry this firearm in the thick woods of Maine or any other local where visibility prevents swinging the big stick.
The action is long enough for the 416 rigby, and a shorter barrel and smaller scope would lighten the load for some closer range work.
