Encore Scope and Mounting Questions
« Reply #30 on: October 12, 2004, 01:47:24 PM »
Guys thanks for all the help!

This site has been a great asset while I have been getting this ML ready!

I am going to try and get the 195's working in the encore....

I cant wait to get all of the stuff that I have in and try it.... I am going to shoot the encore with all of the stock components first and give a report... Then I am going to install the larger hinge pin, .25 acp breech, and the trigger job and give a second range report. I have someone that is going to let me borrow a chrono.. I will try and get the numbers and report them back!

Any and all info is helpful!!!!!!! THANKS!!

Bigjeepinyj,
I don't have the Encore but the next best thing, an Omega .50 stainless.
I just shot the smallest group I've ever shot to date with a ML yesterday.  The 3-shot group @ 100 yds. measured .525" CTC with all 3 shots touching.  These were the first 3 shots out of a clean barrel also with only swabbing between each shot.  They grouped right where the gun was sighted in for....3" high @ 100 yds. and just a touch to the left of center.  The load was 110 grs. T7ffg and 200 gr. Shockwaves.  This is the second time at the range that I have tested this load and it is awesome!  It is going to be my hunting load for ML season in November.  I have also gotten the Hornady SST 250 gr. in a Harvester short sabot to shoot less than 1" consistently using 105 gr. T7ffg.  The Omega barrel is basically the same as the Encore so these loads might work for you also.  I do love my Omega......but the only thing I would  trade it for would be an Encore.  BTW, I am using the .25 ACP conversion from Precision Rifle.  Some day I intend to shoot my Omega with the 209's out of the stock breech plug to see if it will shoot as good as the ACP conversion.  Good luck with your new setup and I'm looking forward to hearing your range results!

As I mentioned, I had great success with the 175 gr. duplex. If they don't work for you, pm me and maybe we can work something out. That's the great thing about muzzleloading; no 2 rifles are the same, so you have to do alot of experimenting before you find the right load. Just because one  person says a bullet doesn't work, doesn't mean it won't work for you! try the 175's over a starting charge of 85 grains. work up from there. not everyone needs 150 grains of powder. at 90 gr. of rs, at 125 yds right on, 150 2"low, 175 5" low. good luck and keep experimenting!

Well got the gun and scope. Ended up going with the leupold quick mounting system.

One thing I noticed after mounting....

The eye relief seemed very short! I could only get about 2 inches away from the scope... Seemed like my cheek was about off of the rest???

Any suggestions.... I have not shot off of a rifle scope very much so it may be normal

I didn't mean to imply you shouldn't try the 195s if you already ordered them of course...you might indeed get very lucky!  I was very disappointed that my Omega would not shoot them.
I too use 110gr FFG 777 and a 200gr Shockwave.  .6" 100 yd group, always under 1" it seems.  Good groups out to 300 yards so far.  The 250gr Shockwave also works well.  That particular bullet is the closest I have seen to an every-gun bullet.
Let us know how the 195s work out for you.

you really have to watch your scope, and buy one with alot of eye relief. 2" doesn't leave you much room to play. I bought the bushnell 3x9  only because it has 4-5" of eye relief. can you swap with another one of your rifles maybe??

Well thought that I would give a report after all of the help that I received.

Here is the setup that I ended up with...

Encore 209X50
Bushnell Elite 4200
Leupold QR Medium Rings
.25 ACP Breech
Larger Hinge Pin

I used the .357 195 DC from Precsion rifle

At 25 Yards It was dead on. I had to use alot of the vertical adjustment to bring the scope up....

Moved back to 100 yards. I got one grouping of 2.25".. Wasnt to happy with that so I took a minute to rest and tried again.

Second grouping was 1.25 inches... I am pretty happy with the results. I am going to go again this weekend and see what I can get. It was cold and wet over the weekend. So I was a little rushed while shooting.

All in all I am very happy, and think that I am going to use the 195 for hunting.

bigjeepinyj, what powder and load are you using? I have 240 of the .357 195 DC from Precision rifle coming any day now.  :-D

thought I'd put my 2 pennies in as well. with the 175's, I'm shooting 90 gr of pyrodex rs, and I can touch 3 rds all day. With the 195's, my rifle liked 95 gr. start low and work up. you'll really notice the lack of bullet drop at longer yardages. very flat shooting bullets.

I just ordered 120 more last night!

I used used the .25 ACP converstion with 100 Grains of Triple 7. Spit swabed and a dry patch each shot....

I noticed virtually no bullet drop from 25 yards to a 100.

I am going to try and shoot again this weekend. We have been plagued with wet and cold conditions all week.

Vapour,
What type of powder do you use? I couldnt believe how well the 195's shot after your post. I thought that I was going to have great trouble getting them to sight in. But that was not the case. I had it sighted in in about an hour.

Here in Missouri, we are limited to .40 caliber or larger projectiles, which pretty well leaves out the .357 caliber offerings from PR.  The way my Omega shoots the Shockwaves/SST's in both 200 and 250 gr. has me plenty happy anyway

In Delaware it is no Muzzleloader smaller than .42 caliber, but you can use a sabot and bullet in .357 though. The .42 cal is meant for minimum bore size not bullet in Delaware. I did call Missouri DNR and they said you can use a sabot and bullet in .357. Missouri is just like here in Delaware. I called Northwest Regional Office

I tried them with as little as 80 grains of FF and FFF 777.  Never was able to get good groups.  I had planned on using those as my main hunting bullet, but I just couldn't get it to work.

Again, congrats.

Thanks for the info, Redhawk!  I was under the impression from reading the regulations that .40 caliber was relating to bullet size also, not just bore diameter.  That opens up the door to experimentation, which is always a good thing!

The rule for indiana was .44 last year. They changed it to .357 this year. I always thought it was dumb that you would use a rifle cartridge that was smaller than 44 but not in a muzzle loader????

I'm glad to hear the 195 grainer worked out for you.  I REALLY wanted to be able to use that bullet but no-go in my Omega :(  I had to settle for the 200 grain Shockwave, which I don't think flies quite as flat.
