H&R 20 ga Ultra Slug Questions
« on: October 09, 2004, 03:56:34 AM »
Newbie here of about 5 minutes.Great site.Need some advice.

Just bought a NEW  H&R Ultra Slug Hunter 20 GA rifled shotgun for my 15 yr old son. This single shot is suppose to be very accurate. The trigger is fairly difficult to pull back.

Also:The 3 shot pattern (3 times)off a bench rest was consistent at 5-6" at 100 yds. With a vg scope and an experience shooter(me). In my opinion--- this is very unacceptable.Used Lightfield Slugs.Anyone out there know about this gun and can enlighten me.

What's really ticking me off is that I called the suggested Customer service # for H&R(Yes  I have the correct #)  3 separated times during the day yesterday and let the phone ring 10-15 times each time during the day.NOBODY EVER PICKED UP THE TELEPHONE AND NO VOICE  : MAIL.WUZ UP HERE?   :xAre they still in business.?

I don't know that I would call a 5-6" group unacceptable.  If you can get the trigger adjusted, it should shoot to half that.  I remember that when I started shooting my Mossberg 500, 6 inches at fifty yards was considered bragging (or lying if someone else told it).  Keep in mind that the vital area of a deer is about 9 inches, and that most deer are shot under  75 yards.  I personally like Brenneke slugs for full diameter slugs, and they make a one ounce 20 gauge slug that you might try.  I am glad to see that you are starting your son out on a single-shot.  I began hunting with a single-shot .22.  My best friend had a semiautomatic that held 19 rounds.  I would bag a squirrel with one shot and he might get one, but he fired 19 times on any squirrel he took.  Good luck and good hunting.

I shoot a Ultra 980- 12 ga. and brother shoots NEF Tracker II plus- 12 ga..  We both use Barnes Expanders with very good results.  1 1/2 to 3" groups at 100 yds..  We only shoot the 2 3/4" shells because there is no need for the extra punishment.  As they say if you need the extra power, get closer.  The shells cost more but remember, you only need one.  I have used both guns and taken deer.  Longest- mine- 153 paces, his- 150 to 200 yds, all I know it was a small target on 6x.  Mine was a one shot kill but the other one 2 shots 2 hits.  Both deer were standing still because I don't like a running shot unless it is really close.  My wifes gun is Mossberg 500 Youth 20 ga. fully rifled and I used Copper Solids so far with fair results, 2'' at 50 yds and open sights.  All I can say is try several from the cheaper sabots to the more expensive ones.  Good luck and have fun.

Ooops...Sorry I didn't see this post sooner...If it was posted in the NEF/H&R1871 Shotgun forum I would have.

Anyway, it sounds like you need to buy a few more brands of sabot slugs to see if any of the others work better than what you are using now.  That is where I would begin.  Personally, I use Winchester Partition Golds in my 12GA Ultra Slugger with good effect.

Give those other slugs a try and let us know....
