Handi bipod
« on: October 09, 2004, 04:49:43 AM »
I would like for some of you guys to put your thinking hats on.  I have an idea about the handi that just might make it a super shooter.  Keep in mind mine is a 223 Ultra Varm and I only, for the most part, shoot from the bench.  I want to put a bipod on mine but have it attached to the bottom of the receiver only.  Attaching a bipod to the forend is not the way to go in my opinion.  That basically is no difference than resting the forend on a sandbag, maybe worse.  Short of tapping the bottom of the receiver and attaching a scope base, then the bipod or tapping a sling swivel into it and then a bipod, I can't think of a good way to do it.  The bottom of the receiver is only about 0.017" or so thick.  Of course tapping the receiver will void any warranty you might still have on the rifle.  I don't think it would hurt the strength if done properly.  The legs on the bipod would need to extend forward at about a 45 degree angle to help balance the rifle or it would be nose heavy.  If we have some good machinists out there that could cut a block of aluminum to fit the contour of the bottom of the receiver it could be glued on.  Then the bipod or legs attached to the alum block.  There are some really strong glues on the market now that would probably hold it there.  Anyway the floor is open, lets hear some ideas.

A bipod mounted on the sling stud is the only way my 223 Ultra will shoot halfway decent. I floated the forend with a bussines card and it shoots about.6" now. Digger

Actually I don't think it's a good idea.  Not because of tapping, but because of the short distance from the recoil pad to the bipod.  The shorter this distance is the more minor movements show up through the scope.

kinda like a long sight radius vs. a short one.  Your movements are amplified more when the distance is short.

My Ultra doesn't seem to care where I rest it.  I'm really getting jazzed about this thing.  It seems to be the least finicky Handi I have.
