Winchester Model 72
« on: October 09, 2004, 08:06:27 PM »
This evening I was compiling a list of all my guns and serial numbers.  When I came to my .22, I noted two things different.  First, there is not a serial number on it anywhere.  I removed the barrel from the stock, thinking that maybe the number had been stamped on the under side of the action, but found nothing.

The next thing that I thought different was that along with the Winchester name and address, caliber of 22 Short Long and Long Rifle, and the Winchester logo are the words "Patent Pending".

The rifle is a tube fed bolt action, 24" barrel, stamped trigger guard with what appears to be a walnut stock.

I aquired the rifle in about the mid 60's from a widow who was our neighbor.  She and her husband were like another set of grandparents to my me and my brother.  After the death of her husband she said that he wanted me and my brother to have his guns.  One was a Winchester 32 Special saddle ring carbine, which my brother got.  I got the Winchester Model 72 .22 with the understanding that it be passed down through the family.  Over the years I've had several opertunitys to sell it as it is a really good shooter and has taken it's share of ground squirrels and birds.  Apart from the obvious sentimental worth, can anyone shed any light on any history of these rifles and monetary worth?[/i]
Thanks,
Trapper Jack

Jack :  Here is what the blue book of values has on it, ( 72/72a- 22l.r. and gallery model (22 short), tube mag. bolt action, 25 in round barrel, aperture or open sight, not serial #, over 161,000 mfg. between 1938-1959.  100% is $375 down to 60% of $85.  Hope this is what you needed. :D    JIM

That was exactly what I was looking for!  Thanks a bunch.  I guess back then, when things weren't so regulated, and owning a firearm wasn't very far from normal, a .22 without a serial number wasn't such a big issue.
Thanks,

Trapperjack, Until the 1968 gun laws went into effect guns were not required to have serial numbers. Some guns had them and some not. A lot of the more inexpensive guns did not have them but then some did. Just depended on the co and if they wanted to serialize them or not. That practice extended to better grade guns even. Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.
