Side mount scope?
« on: October 10, 2004, 07:49:58 AM »
Anyone ever use a side mounted scope on a Win 94 top-eject?   Is it terribly awkward or unwieldy?  I know most people shudder at the thought of scoping any lever gun much less a top-eject 94, but I would like to hear from anyone who has tried it.  Thanks.

Are you aware that you have a forward mount option as well? Less obtrusive but requires long eye relief scope such as is commonly used on handguns.  POW

Side mount scope?

I was just getting ready to ask about that.  I think the "scout" style mounts look quite handsome on surplus rifles.  I know that they are available for the 94 but it would require the purchase of yet another scope.  However that is still an attractive option.  Do you have any experience with this type of scope/mount?  Could you recommend a good fwd mount?  How about an inexpensive long eye relief scope? Thanks.

seabass yes I have used a forward mount scope. Years ago I used one on a post war Win 94 and liked it a lot. The scope I used was the Leupold M-8 2X. At the time was about $100 but unlike today not much else was available. There are a lot of pistol scopes out there today for the same money. Tasco has a good one for low dollars.
I cannot remember the mounts but they may have been Leupold as well. At any rate this is becoming a trend again these days and as you mentioned it is now refered to as a scout rifle setup. Mounts will be easy to find I`m sure.
Having my choice I would take the forward mount every time over the side mount.  POW

My new (last three years)favorite Whitetail rifle is the Winchester '94 carbine era 1971,top eject model.
It's fitted with a Leupold vari X2 iX4x scope and Williams side mount.
The scope is offset to the left,to enable positive ejections of spent cases.
This feature has never caused any problems with me.
