Sidekick is in the house
« on: October 10, 2004, 08:24:22 PM »
Went to BPS and bought the sidekick. I looked and handled the beartooth also. I didn't like the sound it made when I opened the breech or cocking the hammer. It was a loud metallic sound. With that, Larry went back and brought me out a sidekick. It's a 26 incher. I really wanted the 24 but I'll take the 26. I've been using T7 and powerbelt 245s. I don't need to use a magnum load though. My staghorn is very accurate. Hope the sidekick is as accurate. I thought that the 45-70 would be the last I would buy.  Guess Ive been bitten with these single shots. :)    I get busy cleaning the thing tomorrow. What would you recommend to clean the barrel with and should I use a bore brush also. I did on the 45-70. I read somewhere about using something that doesn't have a petroleum base, to keep it from rusting. Would somethin glike PAM  work? It's vegetable oil and just want to get the thing off  on the right foot. :toast:  I'm opened to all suggestions!

Well congratulations on the Sidekick there Tommy!  :agree:  You won't be sorry you got it. I have the standard Huntsman and intend to bloody it up good in about two weeks. Here's a link to cleaning that you will find interesting.

http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=31729

I personally wouldn't use a brush on it unless it gets really full of plastic residue from shooting sabots.
TC Bore Butter is basically the same stuff as the OxYoke too. Powerbelts shoot accurate and clean but I have not put one into a deer yet so I don't know about how they will perform as far as expanding rapidly, etc. I will switch to a sabot and and a 45 cal bullet if they don't open up and cause me to have to track a long ways or (Heaven forbid) lose one.
That 26" barrel is rated for the 150gr. loads and really has me curious about range and accuracy with it, so if ya shoot yours with the full boat and can get a long range shot, please let me know how it does.
BTW if ya ever get tired if that Tracker barrel ya just got I'd appreciate first dibs on it if ya decide to trade or sell it. Figure I'd better do that before MSP or Deadeye or one of them other quick triggered guys beat me to it.  :)  :)  :)

Your Johnny on the spot there lik2hunt, (the name fits too!!) I hope you get that tracker barrel, you should have at least one to send to Ed Gagnon for a  scope rail :).
My smoothbore with the Millett 30mm Red Dot shoots the Brenneke MP's so well I have been thinking of getting a Lee Loader in 12 Gauge and trying to load up some of those hourglass shaped slugs at a slightly reduced velocity.  I was thinking of keeping both the price and recoil down a bit so I can shoot it a lot more. I am thinking that big chunk of lead with good shot placement at the average shot distance of 50-60 yards will do the job even at a bit lower velocity....<><....

The 20 gauge tracker will never leave this house   I got it because of better overall accuracy. I read somewhere  that the 20 ga. tracker has a 1:28 twist and the 12 ga. tracker which my brother has now has a 1:35 twist. Sorry, that 20 is here to stay! I believe that there will be another trip to BPS to get the wonderlube unless JR has something like that at the proshop. :D  The reason I asked about the brush is that wondered if there might be a burr or 2 to get out of the barrel. Right now I'm using some marine grease to put on the threads of the breech plug so it doesn't seize. But I'll get the cva grease or that other stuff you mentioned. I'm thinking that I might as well treat the staghorn to the same regiment. My daughter was asking me since I was getting a new muzzleloader if she could have the staghorn. That girl is after my own heart. Wished the other 2 was as interested. They are somewhat, but everytime I get ready to go to the range I know to take my collection , because Emily will be with me. :D It's really nice that you can spend a little money and get the same or better performance  that you expect from a pricy gun.

MSP - I'm thinking of sending Ed the Pardner sawed-off 12ga. barrel for a railing when some extra (unspoken for) funds get freed up. The 20ga. barrels I can get done around here with no problems since they are little meatier in the chamber area for the drill-n-tap. That 12ga. with the red dot you have oughta be good for any animal on the palnet out to 50 yds. or so. I'm planning on pushing mine out to 100 for deer once it's scoped.

Tommy too bad about the Tracker barrel.....for me anyway :)  Oh well like they say....it was worth a shot. Let us know about the max range on that 26" barreled Sidekick tho. I looked at one today in the blued/wood and I really like the way these look, but I like the way the stainless/synthetic ones look even better. Definitely will go for the 26" barrel if I ever decide to get one.

It's been since spring that I checked but I found two who would do it then and one was $25 and one was $35. The lowest one is the same guy who did the sawing of the Pardner, recrowned, and re-attached the bead all for $25. He is not a big time gunsmith shop owner but he did some graet work on my Pardner.

MSP - I think I ought to mention also that those prices didn't include the rail or the extra attention that Ed pays to epoxy-ing the rail and adding the larger set screws either. They just quoted for a simple drill-n-tap and mount of a rail that I was to provide. No extras.
