Saturday I was curious as to the performance of the 45-70 Winchester 300 grain hollow points...Filled up a 1 gallon milk jug and placed a 40 lb bag of compressed sand directly behind it...Marked off 50 yards, aimed dead center of the jug and WHAMMY..No more jug and quite a display of power from this caliber...Recovered the bullet at about 6 inches into the sand bag..Copper jacket had seperated and was laying to the left side of the bag about 10 inches away 2 pieces I might add..Lead core had mushroomed to .761 at the largest diameter...Not quite double the original .458 diameter..The copper jacket must have seperated on impact of the water to be found that far outside the sandbag..I plan on reloading my own tommorrow or Wednsday using Winchester brass, CCI 200 primers, IMR4198 powder and 300grain nosler partition protected points..If anyone has a good load for this combination I would greatly appreciate it..I have the handi rifle on the sb2 frame topped off with a Tasco Worldclass...By the way the weight of the recovered bullet was 253.5 grains. A loss of 46.5 grains
