Killer Squirrel
« on: October 11, 2004, 04:15:40 PM »
Last week while hunting a hickory ridge for squirrel I noticed a chipmunk running around this big ole hickory tree,  then out of the corner of my eye I see a squirrel coming right at the chipmunk it jumps the chipmunk and starts kicking the poor little things butt.  I shot the squirrel as the fight was going on.  When I got other there I could see where the chipmunk had been hit with my shot but the back of its neck had several nasty bite wound on it.  Never knew squirrel would attack anything like that.

I don't quite understand this statement... You shot at the squirrel, and you hit the chipmunk?  Sounds strange to me.  In reference as to why this squirrel acted so viciously is it is getting near to winter, so I would believe the squirrel felt his food stores were in danger.  At least that is my opinion.  BTW, it still feels like summer here in KA.  It still gets 85 degrees F and higher every now and then.  Oh well, at least we all have something to look forward to after a while. :?   Maybe we'll get snow next year, who knows.....  Patriot

Squirrel seanso starts too early.  The mothers are still nursing their young in my area.  Shouldn't start till the first of December.

DaveH:  Yep, squirrels will attack and drive off other rodents to secure a food source or nesting area.  I have watched gray squirrels tassle with chipmunks, red squirrels and then watch black squirrels fight with the grays.  All this serves to do is set up more squirrels for my crosshairs.  I have to thin my squirrel population regularly or they start messing with everything.  And, of course they bury their nuts and of course my dog digs tank traps in the back yard trying to find them.  I can regularly find a dog dug hole 1.5 ft deep.  Of course I will know which dog dug the hole, as his nose will be covered with dirt and his tail will be waggin' like sixty.

Ah yes, life with dogs and killer squirrels (lol).  Mikey.
