Convert a clip fed rifle to internal magazine
« on: October 11, 2004, 08:39:38 PM »
I'm not sure if I asked this here before, but here goes. I apologize if I did.

I have an older Savage 110 and was wondering if it can be converted to an internal magazine? The clip pops out everytime after the last round has been fired. This would be OK if I had another clip to slam in there but I see more disadvantages to the clip than advantages.

I'm thinking of just making some sort of latch on the bottom of the rifle that will not allow the clip to drop out until "I" want it to. Like a Remington with the drop out magazine. I could even use the spring in the magazine for this.

If I converted it, what parts do I need? I'm not able to get another rifle, I like this one, just not the clip.

Suggestions?

First, the magazine should not be popping out!..  Perhaps a fix of that problem is what you're really looking for.  To convert to a box magazine you would need all the bottom metal parts, including the magazine box, follower with spring, and the trigger guard assembly.  I am unsure if the inletting for the detachable magazine is different than for a fixed magazine.  The parts you need are available from several sources and even Savage would most likely have what you need.  I would give them a call or email and ask just to be sure..  My suggestion would be to fix the problem rather than go to all the trouble...

Normally I'd agree with you, but I'm not a fan of clip rifles.  It's kinda stupid how I ended up with it, cause I bought it off gunbroker, used, and TOTALLY overlooked that part.  Such a shock when I opened the box that I immediatly went back to the listing thinking I had been decieved, but it was right there in black and white,  I like the rifle and got a good price for it but want to do away with the clip.

Yes, I do need to fix the problem, eventually, but I figure if I have shot 4 times and still need more shots, it my own fault and shouldn't be shooting anyway.

Well parts are available and the only part that may be a problem is the stock.  I don't know if the inletting for the clip is larger than for the fixed magazine or if it's the same...  If it's larger it may show when the fixed magazine is installed...

Your least costly option is to fix the magazine ejection problem and live with the rifle as is, or sell it and get a box magazine rifle.

If you have a burning desire to keep the rifle and convert to the box then perhaps you might want to check out eBay.  You might get lucky there with bottom metal and a stock.  Just make sure that you get the right parts, short action parts don't work very well in a long action, etc.  After effecting the conversion, you could then sell the excess parts on eBay to recover some of your costs.

I know from experience that this works, but I was working with a Rem 700 SA and there is an abundance of parts.

good luck
