.54 Hawken w/ 1-48"twist and R.E.A.L bullets?
« on: October 12, 2004, 07:49:46 AM »
My brother just picked up a used TC Hawken in .54 and he's thinking about using R.E.A.L bullets in it with the 1-48" twist.
Wondering if anyone has tried these and how they shot?

Thanks a bunch

REAL Bullets

I shoot 320 grain REAL bullets in my .50 cal. TC Hawken and they do a good job. They shoot better than prb for me in the 1to 48 twist.

A while back I have shot them out of a .54 Renegade 1:48 and they worked pretty well.  I was using the heavier ones, I think I remember that they weighed out at 430 grains.

Just keep trying till you find the charge of blackpowder that will stabilize that bullet with that twist in that barrel you have.

Thomas...what powder charge did you get the best accuracy out of in your .54?

It's been quite a while since I have used that load I really don't remember the charge.  I do remember that I was shooting Elephant brand FFg, but the exact charge that worked the best, I really can't remember.  The REALs were finger lubed with Bore Butter and I think the cap was CCI regular.

However I do remember a 50 yard three shot group that all were touching with that combination.  Just start with the suggested load that comes with the mould and then adjust for accuracy from there.  Everyone's barrel is a bit different and you just have to try till you find the combinations that yours likes.  Just like barrels, each lot of blackpowder is also a tad different and it's just experimentation.

wnc: I shoot the REAL in both my t/c flinter 50 cal and my 54 cal. New Englander ,in the new englander with the same 1 in 48 twist I use 380 grain REAL with a wad and 80 grains 0f 3f goex black powder ,it will clover leaf the groups at the50 yard tarGet and the 100 it stays inside a softball group .
I ALSO USE THE 320 real IN THE FLINTER AND THE SAME POWDER CHARGE OF 80 GRAINS

Lonewolf, I think he picked up the REAL bullets from the same guy you're talking about. I think I might give a couple of them a try and see how they do in my renegade :-)

Thanks again
