Howdy,
Has anyone tried CB longs or shorts in their Single Six?

How well do they shoot and is there a noticeable reduction in the noise?

I've tried CB longs in rifles but never in a handgun. I didn't find them to be very accurate but they are quiet.

Quiet, yes. You'll need a little holdover for ranges longer than arms length. Still much better than the Super Colibri.

there is a reduction in noise, but not near as quiet as out of a rifle

I have used a TC for years with CBs to pop starlings on the fence in back of the garage. They seem to loose accuracy quickly, getting erractic beyound about 25 feet. 44 Man

Yes, I've used them in 4 5/8" and 6 1/2" barreled Single Sixs. It is a great way to start out children shooting handguns. CBs work well to dispatch pests in the backyard. At close ranges, they shoot close enough to the sight settings used for .22 LR not to require adjustments.

Good topic, is it bad to shoot shorts in your single-six? Or should you just clean the cylinders after shooting them and before shooitng LR's?

I don't think an infinite amount of shorts fired in your single six would ever harm it. After shooting your gun just pull a bore snake thru the cylinder just like you do the barrel. That removes any bullet lube or residue that might cause problems when chambering the longer rounds.

At the Ruger website the New Model Single Six Revolver page says "All 22 LR models accept 22 Short and Long cartridges...."

I would imagine it's similar to shooting 38 in your 357. Any fouling I've experienced was easy to clean. I've never tried a bore snake in the cylinders but sounds like a good idea.

Thanks, I'll give them a try this weekend. I have a box of .22 shorts that are "powerless" fire on the primer only......
What is a .22 long?, granted I am new (again) to shooting but what is the difference between a Long and a LR?

I've never had a problem with .22 LRs chambering. The CBs don't leave much residue behind at the case mouth. The cylinder cleans right up with a little solvent and a patch.

The .22 Long is between the .22 Short and .22 LR in length and power.

The 22 "Long" used the 22lr case and a shorter, lighter bullet that the LR. The only "Longs" still in production are the CB Longs by CCI, to the best of my knowledge. You must be using the Aguila "Super Colibri". These are propelled by the priming compound only. Give the CCI "CBs" a try. They come in the short and long version. These are more powerful than the primer powered rounds, but less so than the regular 22 rimfires.

I like the CB longs better than the shorts only cause they will cycle through my old mossy 151 rifle and the shorts wont. I also like the remy subsonics which are more potent than the CB's but dont give quite the crack as a regular LR. Id shoot more of them for close range plinking if they weren't about twice the price as reg LR's around here. Even at twice the price they are still cheap compared to other calibers / ammo . :grin:

I like the CCI CB Longs. If my memory recalls correctly they were shooting about 458fps out of my 6.5" Ruger Single Six. About 700fps from my 18" barreled rifle. BEWARE of ricochet's. I use them for small pesky pests at close range. Had a bullet ricochet back towards me a couple times.

I've had the same experience with Aguila Colibi's and Super Colibries. ( Colibries actually bounced off cardboard target holder.) Seems they don't have enough energy to deform so they can bounce. :oops:
