Resizing problem for 45-70
« on: October 12, 2004, 02:03:58 PM »
Just started loading some 45-70 loads today..I'm using winchester brass and a lee steel resizer..lubed the cases as required and after resizing there are dents on three sides of the case about 1/64th deep and about 3/8ths to 1/2 inch back from the mouth..What could be causing this and does this have any effect on the case during firing..This is new brass by the way and I resized because some of the mouths were deformed..Primer pockets were good as well, pretty uniform...

It sounds as if there is too much lube. I use Hornady's One Shot spray lube. I throw the cases in the bottom of a clean cardboard box, spray a second or two, shake the box and spray them once more. That will keep the denting problem down.

Everyone here has it right.  The dents result from the hydraulic pressure between the case wall and the die when there is a little too much lube on the case.   It does no real harm  outside of esthetics.  I have always used anhydrous lanolin for resizing, and if I begin experiencing this phenomina, I put a more even spread of lube on the cases using my fingers.  And no more dents.  All kind of ways to skin a cat....
