hows your Deer season goin?
« on: October 15, 2004, 05:55:57 AM »
I have passed on a few Does but will fill the 2 bonus antlerless tags soon enough. We usually are only allowed 1 Deer (either sex) & I have always held out for a Buck.  Most have this years young with & I have not shot a Doe since around 1980.  Just a personal thing.  I have seen 1 heavy beamed 6 point but as a rule the bucks hit my hunting area hard from now till gun season.  I know of 2 dandies running this area (3 years now) so hope to tag one of them.  Been close a couple times.  Let us all know how your season is going-

I have got a nice 7 point about 3 weeks ago. I have passed on a couple of smaller bucks. I also will be hunting in Maryland and hope for a big buck. I will have to take some doe's though, the farmer we are leasing the land from wants us to take doe's.  :D

Hawk,
Where are you hunting in MD?

I am headed up there next weekend 10/22-23 to hunt sika deer on the eastern shore. It should be a good time.

My season has been a little slow. I have seen deer and been the victim of swirling winds (not wearing my scent-lok  )
I am headed out tomorrow morning though... we will see.
Cheers,
Billy

I am on a lease by Goldsboro MD. It is about midway between the Annapolis bridge and Newark Delaware. It is in the Eastern part of MD. I was also invited on a Sika deer hunt in MD, but I have not got all the details on the hunt or a location.

I got my first bow kill last week after two years of trying.  I missed a nice doe earlier in the day and then was able to connect with a small spike buck later the same day.  I had deer all around me for about an hour before I was able to make the shot. I double lunged him and he dropped with 50 foot of where I hit him. I got him just outside of Westminster Md. I have been hunting a small farm there and have seen deer every time I have hunted but never had them come within range. This bow hunting is tuff. I could have taken one every time with a rifle or shotgun. I am really starting to like the challenge.

I got back to the same place a few days later and watched a nice buck for at least 30 minutes. He slowly was making his way towards me. But I ran out of day light before he got close enough to make out exactly how large he was. Bummer

I am getting ready to head out to Cambridge Md later this week for a few days of black powder hunting. I looking for a wall hanger now that I got some meat in the freezer.

I am still passing Does-just started seeing scrapes & Bucks in our are are
area.  NE Iowa.  Have seen 5 different Bucks in the past week 2 -6s -15 yards & then 2 other 6s over 50 yds away & 1 nice heavy 8 @ 25 yards.
Many Does-I see Does nearly every trip to the stand.
Our Bucks should start moving real good in a few days with the 1st 2 weeks of Nov. looking to be the best for the big boys.  I have several Does that should bring em in close to me.  Been playing tag for 3 years  with a couple bruisers.  Good luck to all.  I have a buddy from Md. that has taken 2 Bucks & 2 Doe with Bow & 1 with Muzzleloader.

I have been out three times in the last 10 days and saw several doe families and three bucks.  Last night a 120 class 8 pt walked right under my stand.  Very tempting but he needs another year to grow.  I am holding out because last year I shot a big buck with a very similar rack so I have seen what those gentics will produce given another year.  A friend of mine also saw a 180 class 10 ot two days ago so that makes easier to keep the arrows in the quiver.  I would even bet that last nights buck was a 2 1/2 yr old son of the 4 1/2 yr old I got last year.

We have this stupid antlerless hunt fot the next four days so I will be duck hunting instead.  Rubs and scrapes are just now appearing so next week should be very good.

I hunt near Centerville, Md near the 301/50 split and hunt for sika down route 50 about 15 miles from Cambridge.

Last weekend we saw 6 sika deer in the marsh. I only harvested a spike. My father shot an 8 point near centerville. 17" inside spread. it was a nice big bodied deer, but not like the monsters over there.

Let me know how that sika hunt goes.

Had 7 Does come by @ 15 yards but was 2 MaMas with 5 young-2 were button bucks-lots of video of them & the Button Bucks were fighting like a couple kids.  Then a Buck with a fork on one side & spike on the other came out chasin them-they just stayed away from him.  We are only allowed 1 Buck so I let him go-I am hoping for one of the biggies I have seen in the past.  I have missed 1 Doe at 25 yds.-pretty video as the arrow passes just over her back.  Now I have my misses out of the way.  Keep everyone posted.  I have until Dec. 1st b/4 gun season.  Good Luck to those who have yet to fill a tag.

Killed 2 soo far.  A 12 inch wide 4 point on election day and then a 17 3/4 inch wide 11 point today.  Grosses just a tick under 140.  A frickin giant for this part of WV.  Biggest deer I have ever seen let alone get a shot at.  I thought I was goin to pass out after I saw that arrow hit where I needed it to.  Gotta love this huntin stuff.   Good luck to all the rest of you.

Seen a whole mess of deer and turkeys last week!! It was great in comparison with opening week (saw one doe and fawn while on stand), passed on a lot, including a not too bad six pointer. I passed on him broadside at 25 and then had a change of heart when he was at 35..I then proceeded to shoot over his back! I've seen him running the same ridge 3 times since so I've kinda put him on layaway while I hold out for one the resident monsters to wander by. I'm heading back for wed. night though and will hunt full time till the end!! Good luck all!!

Since I ain't no bowhunter (just a wannabe   ...get all my info from a veteran and am getting my first bow in a month), I hunt with guns; both modern rifle and traditional muzzleloader. First day of muzzleloader my damned gun didn't go off at one 20 yards and perfect shot. Pan went off and the doe took off. CRAP. So...that's my luck so far. Deer season opens within a week and some odd days here in PA....hope I can score it big then. Good luck to ya all and take care!  :D

Two days left & I have passed or had tons of Does all around me within EASY bow range the last few times out.  Each time I have had Good Bucks from 40-50 yards away but not where I can get a shot, so, I let the Does pass hoping the Bucks WILL come closer.  Just not happening-BUT it only takes ONE & a few seconds to change that.  Still Trying in Iowa...
I did take a hog in Oklahoma during my home states gun season (I only Bowhunt) & that was a great time.  Took the hog at Shiloh Bowhunting Ranch , Stonewall, Ok..

My last day of Bowhunting was a good one.  I had  9 Does & yearlings parade past my stand at 3:30pm & feed in the picked corn from 10-30 yards away until around 4:30 when they moved out of Bow Range.  No Bucks.  Still, I had a great season & last day.  I climbed down & headed back-20 yards from my stand, I look up & here stands a very high racked 10 point Buck.  I go through all the motions & say "NEXT YEAR BIG BOY".
Starting in March I head for Texas to film & Bowhunt with friends for my next Exotic/Hog Bowhunting video..  Spring Rios/Hogs & Exotics will start my 2005 & 49th year of Bowhunting Biggame.  I am truly blessed.
Take time out now & do those things with family we may have been neglecting because of hunting.
