Paper Patch bullets in a 38-55
« on: October 15, 2004, 09:24:39 AM »
If anyone shoots PP bullets in a 38-55 with black powder please share your loads with me.  I shoot a Marlin 336 CB with PP bullets and smokeless powder and get better than I can hold groups at 100 yds..  But I can't get it to work with BP.  ANY help would be appreciated.

I paper patch for the 38-55, but can't help you with blackpowder loads. This is a subject of discussion in the Black Powder Cartridge News quarterly magazine put out by Steve Garbe. He hunts with Black in the 38-55. Try contacting him, he'll give you good information.

:D Hi, Thanks for the info on the black powder loads.  How do your pp bullets perform for hunting.  What alloy do you use, bullet velocity, weight of the bullet and what rifle do you use?

Lyman 375248 or RCBS 37-250-FN cast of pure lead and sized in a LEE push thru sizer to .372", patched with two wraps of onionskin to .380" diameter and lubed with Paul Matthews patch lube (45% beeswax/55% vaseline). Shot at about 1400 to 1500 fps out of Browning, Winchester or Marlin rifles. Expand to .75" and kill very dead. All rifles have a groove diameter of .3785" to .381".  100 yd. groups of 2" or better.
