UNDERHAMMERS?? What the... Thanks alot guys!
« on: October 15, 2004, 03:38:09 PM »
Fellas,

Just when I think I have got a pretty good grasp on this "addiction"...

I was planning my next BP 'fix' with a flintlock.  Then someone utters the term 'underhammer'.  Now I have got to have one of these!

Does it ever end?  (I hope not!)

Stoots-No problem, get 'em both! It's really the simplest solution--at least that's what I keep telling myself and anyone else who will listen.

there was a Kentucky gunsmith in the 18th century that made a double ,twisting barreled flintlock,so after firing one barrel you twisted the barrel to the new un fired barrel with its own lock,D.Boone use one.

King- I like the growth thing--- sort of a New Age-ish touchy feely approach to aquiring muzzleloaders. I'm for any rational that works. Actually, I'm in the unique and much treasured position of having a better half that encourages me in my obsession. Case in point: she not not only encouraged me to buy my new Hawken a week ago, but she bought me a second gen 1st model Dragoon as an early CHRISTmas gift. Truly I am blessed!
For those who would like one, Leonard Day will still make a swivel breech rifle in either flint or percussion persuasion for a reasonable price.
You can get it rifled or smooth bored or as a combination gun. Don't have one yet---but someday....

Speaking of obsessions and muzzleloading madness, has anyone ever built one of Don Stith's Deluxe Hawken Squirrel rifles? This is one handsome shooting iron, but I'd like to hear about the level of difficulty involved. Hard for me to believe that anything that sweet is within my capabilities, but maybe... He does business as St. Louis Plains Rifle Co. in Virginia.

54 cal. Green Mountain barrel.  Hopkins and Allen hammer and trigger with my receiver.

I now have four stocked receivers and a fist full of barrels! I have an interchangeable barrel system, that lets me swap barrels to different receivers.

Round Ball shooters, 32, 36, 45, 54, 62, and a 72.

Slug shooters, 2 50s and a 54.

Smooth bore, with a non interchangable barrel......7ga.............shoots a 1000 grain RB with 180 grains of FF at 1100 fps.

BS, how does the half cock or "safety" position work on these guns?  I've thought about one of the Deer Creek kits for a kids gun but am not sure of the safety aspects.  Any help or advice appreciated

Woodbutcher, yes I made the stock and the butt plate.

Longcuise, half cock is a big noch in the hammer, that works very well.

Dear BS:
A little more info would be greatly appreciated. GREATLY!  (1) Your receivers? Did you make them? (2) Different rifling in the slug guns than in the round ball barrels? (3) If so what is the source of the slug barrel (4)  Is the barrel installation somehow different from a tightened threaded assembly in order to be able to interchange?
 Really nice work!  Thankyou, Woodbutcher

Woodbutcher, I have made recievers out of cold rolled steel [shown] then browned, Bronze, Aluminum and the Seven Ga. is all Stainless.

The slug shooter have faster twist rifleing to stabilize the longer bullets. The 50s are 1in22 and 1in36. Round ball shooters are 1in66 or70.

As far as brands

32 Douglas
45,54 Green Mtn
50,62,72 Orion
50,54 De Hass
7ga. Seamless stainless pipe .......proof tested with a double load and ball

The breech plug extends back into the reciever and is tighted by a set screw.

BS, VERY<VERY nice. The real elegance that can be seen in the H&A style firearm really shows!

Longcruise, the half-cock on  the H&A's from BlueGrouse is probably one of the most positive you will ever see. It is a very deep notch that engages the entire sear tang on the hammer, that fully interlocks the two parts.
