Wally World goof up?
« on: October 16, 2004, 05:25:09 AM »
Lik2hunt called last night about some Wby. Vangaurds on sale at Wallyworld for 250. I went there but the same price was still on them, but the scanner read $250. So I bought one for my grandson in 7 Rem mag.,and clerk was a friend of mine and went to back and checked the test targets. He picked one that had a dime sized group and I bought it. They say this is in all the Wallmart stores, and the Vangaurd is a very good gun. They still had a 7mag,270,30 06, and a 300WSM. in stock at the Durant store.  Digger

It's no goof up..... Wal-Mart is down sizing certain rifles that will still be available in their special order catalog.  I purchased several Remington 700 ADL's in .223 for $300.00 that had been on the shelf for $379.00  If I had waited they would have been gone.  But if they had still been on the shelf would have gone down to $250.00 as well.

Now the Remington 700 ADL's in 22-250 also were on the hit list, and I purchased one, the only one left in my store because the Department Manager told me it just went down to $250.00 plus my 10% discount.

Even if you don't need them, if you find them at that price buy them up.  A man just can't have to many you know

But it has given me a reason to shoot more... ammo is cheap for the .223 Rem and now I must get into reloading this as well.  The 22-250 is a no brainer either.  We got plenty of varmints and predators were I live that it just makes scense to own these varmint rifles.  It gives me a longer hunting season as the season for these is 365 days a year.

Now the nice thing is, is that these prices are NOT clearance so you can put these on lay-a-way with 10% down.  Do not let the regular sales associate tell you that they are clearance priced.  Unless there is a red clearance sticker on them, they are not.  I had a regular associate try this with me at our Polson Mt store and I had to correct her.  She did not like that but hey when you work semi management for them, you just know more.  I told her to call Bentonville Ark Corp Office if she did not like it.

I believe you can purchase up to 6 firearms on the 4473 form.  :-D

Hmm.  I had heard of the Vangaurds for $250, but when I went to the Mt. Pleasant, SC store today the only one they had (a .300 Wby Mag) was still marked $388.  I wonder if it would ring up at the sale price . . ..

Well I took the plunge and got the 30-06 today  :D  8) I'm very happy, My target had a quarter sized group and danged if that Digger didn't drive 30 minutes west and find one for his son-in-law with a dime sized group on it too. Oh well, did I mention I'm VERY Happy....oh yea  :) I've had my eye on one and planned to get one someday but I just couldn't pass up a $138 markdown. Had to sell a trolling motor and my Mossberg 500 to swing it but hey, they are replaceable and the Vanguards were unlikely to ever be marked down like that again. While I was in the gun shop selling the motor and gun today I asked the owner how much he would give for a good used Weatherby Vanguard. He says if it had a clean chamber and bore and the bluing was still in pretty good shape he'd give about $250 to $300.....well guess what.....mine came to $271+change Brand NEW! So I know I could get my money out after some good use and good times and hopefully some good kills....if I choose to do so.
Apparently not all the calibers or models(???) are marked down. The store where I purchased mine has two 300WSM and they are not included.....they said.....so the only way to really find out about one is to ask I guess. The only gun left at our store here that is marked down is a .270 and it is now marked in the case for $250. So if you want to get in on one of these deals make a trip to your local Wally World and do some checking, you may be surprised. I was also told today of a 30-06 Savage 110 Syn package w/scope at the store just across the border in Texas for $250 also.....need to check and see if that is true and post back I guess. Any help on that one Montanan?

MG; The price on these were 388 also, but when they scanned it,it came up 250. I've got one in 300Wby and its a shooter for sure, with 180 BT's going trough the chrono. at 3175fps. with a near max load of IMR 7828.
This is the only load I've tried so far,but it shoots .70" at 100 yds.  Digger

Don't go by the marked price tag, have them scan it with a Telxon (sounds like Tel-zon) this is the ONLY way to tell for sure.

Guess I'll be heading there tommorow.  Now that I think of it, at another store in the area I think I recall seeing a Vangaurd in .243.  I might check out that one first.  .300 Weatherby would be nice, but it's a little much (too much IMHO) for whitetails which is the only big game around here.  If I ever get a chance to go for an elk hunt I think my .30-06 would be enough anyways  :-).

Sweetness!   Alas, I have acquired too many new firearms this year as it is, making it hard to choose which one to use this modern gun season.  The last thing I need is to befuddle my brain with more choices.  I'll be standing in front of the safe drinking coffee scratching my head when I should be freezing on the stand if I'm not careful.

For those interested.....Digger.....that Savage I spoke about across the river is a 7 Mag not a 30-06. Try the Pottsboro exit store.

I bought a 270 Vanguard yesterday.  Had to drive 2 hours because local store sold last one.  All I know is the 270 and 30/06 are on clearance.  Yes they also had a Savage 111 in 30/06 with Simmons 8 point scoe on it also on clearance for $250.  My rifles taget showed a group of 7/16" with power points 130 gr.  Thats better than what my Savage Tactical 308 shot.  Also better than my Whitetails Unlimited Handi-rifle in 270 has shot so far.  Need to find bases so I can find out how well it really shoots.  Anybody elses Vanguard shoot the power point or do they used something else.

Well, made the trip today.  The .243 was gone, and the .300 Weatherby's were not on sale with the rest of them (in transit I had decided I didn't want a .300 Weatherby anyways.  It's too heavy and expensive for target shooting, and there's nothing around here that my .30-06 or 6.5x55 can't kill).

HOWEVER, I did find a Charles Daly Maxi-Mag 3.5" pump shotgun in Realtree Hardwoods camo for $125.  I've already got a Remington 870, a Browning A5, and an NEF Pardner that mostly had my shotgunning needs covered, but I saw that this would shoot 3.5" loads, so I just couldn't pass it up :D.

I stopped at the wal-mart sporting goods tonight. They had a Savage 7mm Package rifle for $175.00 and 243, 270 and 30-06s for $250.00. I don't know why the rifles have different prices. I really don't need another rifle, but ! ???

Well here goes,
Had to make a trip from SW OK to NE OK today, must have gone to about 8 wallyworlds.  These specials are going fast.  Missed a 7 Rem mag in the Weatherby Vanguard by about 4 hours.  Finally found in OKC a 7 mag in the savage 110 but decided not to get it because of the crappy simmons scope and the fact that it had a very light weight barrel and did not have the new accutrigger.  Could just see that barrel getting so hot you couldn't touch it in about three shots.  All these plus 3 243 savages with the slightly better simmons scope and some WV 30-06 and 270 Win for $250.  Finally I bought a savage 110 in 243.  I already have a custom 243 on a commercial mauser action, what the he... do I need with another 243.  Just like the wife, when you see a bargain, buy it, need does not inter into the equation.  So now I have a 270 win in the Weatherby Vanguard and a 243 in the Savage 110.  Go figure.  Totally nuts.   :) I confess, only to this group, not my wife.  Still have the 243 in my pickup, maybe get it out to the shop tomorrow.  Once it is there it is just another rifle like the others.  I hope this is the last of these good deals after two rifles and a pickup load of relaoading stuff, 2 dillon presses, etc last week, I am so broke......... :x  :x Guess I better get started loading some ammo for the next big shoot out.  Oh yeah, also bought a chrony.  You know, got to know how fast them suckers are going.  Bye the bye, Chronoed one of the 22-250 rounds that WW advertises at 4000 fps.  Out of my Shilen barreled custom FN Mauser, it read 4093 fps.  That was just one shot.  Can't wait till I can go to the range with my own chrony and see what all this stuff reads.  As someone said on this forum,  I am a happy puppy.

The local wally world here in Richmond Ky has a Vanguard in 300 Weatherby.  I have no need for such a cannon, so I didn't bother having it scanned.  I was there for something else and walked by the rack just to see if they had one.

Picked my VG 270 up last night. I have to say I'm very impressed with it. I really like the fluted bolt. Great trigger pull, nice polished blue receiver, and a 24'' barrel. Definitly will buy another Weatherby.

The trigger on mine feels like it is set about 3 lbs. Sweet trigger pull. Can't waite till tonight. I picked up my weaver bases for it at lunch time so I can put my 4-12x40 Bushnell on it.

weatherby (300win mag)and savage(270 or 3006) guns at my store scanned to 360-390, just like the tags said they would.

How do I find one of these mismarked/clearance guns?

My opinion is this is a regional thing. The reason I think that is a lot of shooters buy the win white box value packs of .223 ammo at Walmart. The Walmarts here don't carry the value packs nor do they carry the Bushnell 3200 scopes that were recently on sale at a lot of Walmarts in other parts of the country.
