soft point spitzer bullets for 30 30 win?
« on: October 16, 2004, 07:23:00 AM »
Hi
i own a couple of 3030s  a savage 340 and a  m24 . i.ve tried some spitzer bullet in them from 125 up to 135 gr pistol sierra bullets working very nice but 150 grain hornady barley opens up at the velocity i can achieve (2200 fps) . which bullet in 150-165 gr range would work well at low velocity generated in a 3030? i need a good pointed bullet enough soft to open at low velocity and enough tough to get the job done on big game.
all the best

I use bulk 150 Winchester Power points PSP, in my wifes Savage. With H335, I have no problem reaching 2400 fps, and the bullets open up real good. You should also look at the bulk Remington 150g RN that is for the .30-30. It looks to have a good BC, and runs at less preasure than the Winchester bullet. I have no problem at all getting 2450 fps with the remington bullet, and no sign of preasure. Good luck.

Nosler Ballistic Tips are reputed to be the easiest of the .30 cal 150 spitzers to get to expand with Hornady close behind. You did not say what test media you are using and I am deeply suspicious of how well most test media mimic terminal ballistics on game.

2200 fps sounds a bit low to me. The 2400 that Snowshoe mentions dows not sound at all out of reach.

The Nosler Ballistic Tips may be good at that speed, but don't waste you money on them for the Savage 340. The clip is the limiting factor on over all length of the cartridge. It will not alow you to use the BT's, without seating them so deep that you have a gap between brass and bullet. The bullet is just too long, but it may work in the single shot rifle.
