raise some Hell with NPR's supposed ethics expert
« on: October 17, 2004, 11:30:20 PM »
Working in my garage this afternoon I caught National Public Radio's Weekend Edition piece with their "ethicist" Randy Cohen regarding the ethics of a woman using an inherited mink coat.  Right off the top he says "I think we call all agree we should wear a new fur coat ...there is no justification for something so frivolous...." or words to that effect.

Here's the website you can give a listen:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4113413

Time to raise hell with these goofs.  Here in  remote Alaska we have many idle young men who would love to be out earning a living trapping - but the anti fur people have ruined their markets.  The same antis are trying to restrict the control of wolves too.

Is it any wonder so many of our young men self destruct in booze, drugs, and suicide when they see their most ready source of meat depleted by wolves and bears, one of their very few locally available economic opportunities crushed by a bunch of self righteous urbanites, who also do everything in their power to stop the only other reasonably close economic opportunity by blocking development of our oil and gas resources?  Those same folks love to sit around sipping their wine and brie congratulating themselves for saving the environment and being culturally diverse and sensitive yet their actions and big donations try to freeze frame our village residents into what amounts to life in a museum  with public welfare as one of a very few economic opportunities.  Let me remind you that fish farms in Chile, Europe, Canada and the lower 48 have nearly knocked out the other main economic opportunity of commercial salmon fishing for many rural Alaskans.

In the mean time, if you go to local public meetings you'll hear elder after elder complain about the over abundance of beaver messing up salmon and white fish streams, as well as boat access to hunting a berry picking areas.  You'll also get an earful about how the wolves are too numerous and moose getting scarce.

Let's give NPR an earful and get OUR story out.

Dand i heard the same thing coming back from salmon fishing... A bunch of BS for sure.. They are beyond self righteous.... i think what they need is a month in  boondocks with the  wolves, beavers ect and see  how thier minds react and IF they survive.

Well, I sent my rebuttal to NPR and CC'd Bud Pidgeon at Sportsman's Alliance.

I think the Sportsman's Alliance is a pretty good outfit. Check it out if you haven't:    http://wlfa.org/

I listen to NPR every day. No thine enemy. They'll tell you what the liberal, PC crowd is thinking. Right now they are sniveling about fund raising. Listen but don't send them any money.

NPR is always whining about fund raising. Send them a buck--skin or perhaps some scent glands so they can get back to nature.

Just joking. Just don't send money. Complain to your congressman or congresswomen about National Public Radio and Television taxpayer-funded subsidies.

I have to give credit where credit is due.  The issues you are talking about is very real, and very possibly some of these people do not understand your plight.  However...Alaska is NOT California....you cannot lump the two together with the same politics and regulations.  Maybe you need to write to these folks and make your case with them, very possibly they will do a story that will fairly represent your needs.  I hear things on NPR that are very biased toward the left, but I also hear a fair representation.  I tuely beleive that NPR is 'TRYING' to deliver ALL of the facts so that you can make an educated decision on things that matter.  I am also very impressed with the election coverage.  Both candidates are fairly and evenly represented.  NPR might be staffed mostly with liberals, but I think that most of them are doing a good job.  I still prefer it for news MORE THAN ANY OTHER SOURCE.  It would seem that you guys are listening to it too.  There must be something that you like.
Now on the other hand...during the recent fund-raising....I definately heard a few of the people voice strong political statements for the Dems.  I DO NOT think this was NPR's intent, these people were not the usual announcers and in my opinion they erred with thier words and did not sound very professional.
  Get out and VOTE!

NPR, along with the vast majority of the media is very LIBERAL. I have seldom heard an equal, fair, balanced or otherwise arguement regarding guns, hunting or fishing. Did anyone catch the news bleb last week in California where coyotes are fast becoming an extreme menice in many cities? No hunting or trapping allowed! Neighborhood cats and dogs are falling victum as the coyotes are realizing they have nothing above them in the food chain. People have gone to their city councils to no avail. To paraphrase the council members, "All life is precious and we should not intervene." I've scratched my head many times trying to figure out the essential lack of logic, not to mention their total disregard for the safety and well being of the constituants they supposedly are representing. By the way, I'm glad to see that gun bans and hunting bans have so drastically reduced the crime rate out there. Ignorance is dangerous.
If a tree falls in the woods and my wife is not there to hear it...is it still my fault?
