SAvage 219L...
« on: October 18, 2004, 02:26:58 PM »
I have a Savage 219L single shot that I purchased new in 1965. I bought it in the .22 Hornet version...30/30 was also available.

   This rifle has a 26" barrel. Even though the single shot break action handles the extra length well, I would still like to shorten the barrel to about 20"..

   Question; what is the optimum length barrel for a .22 Hornet..

I have a Hornet (actually a K-Hornet) with a 20 inch barrel and it shoots fine but looks stubby. Mine is a Martini Cadet.   My barrel has a 1 in 14 twist and I believe the Mod. 219 Hornet has a 1 in 16 twist.  Shortening your barrel would affect accuracy as well as decreasing the value of your rifle.  These Mod. 219 Hornets are hard to find.  If you want a short barreled Hornet, buy a TC G-2 Contender rifle set and order a 20 inch barrel with the 1 in 14 twist.

2520;

     When you said that shortening the barrel would affect the accuracy...did you mean adversely?
   If there's any chance of that, I will pass up the idea.

   I didn't figure the 219 to be valuable to anyone but myself, for sentimental reasons...

I, too, have a Savage 219 in .22 Hornet - they were first made in 1936 and were a wll made weapon back then and hold their own now.  They are neat old guns that shoot well just as they are.......enjoy it like it is. yep, it is just my opinion.

I also bought one in the 60's, my first centerfire rifle. I still shoot it occasionally. These are nice, old guns and you'd be surprised what a good one might bring from a shooter who knows and appreciates them.
