Got Me a #1 in .416 Rem. mag.
« on: October 18, 2004, 07:48:26 PM »
Hi All,
Got a deal on a #1 in .416 Rem..  It was used only slightly by the original owner (about 30 rounds).  I don't think he enjoyed shooting it all that much.  I don't really "need" it...there have been no reports of any cape buffalo in Tennesse as of yet.  But, if they ever show up I'll be ready.
In the mean time, I've cast some 350 g. GC bullets to make up reduced loads using Accurate 5744.  I plan on loading it down to about 1700-1800 fps..  Has anyone had any experience using 5744 for reduced loads?  If so, are there any quirks that I need to know about?
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
TnNuc

Hey Tennessee,  Maybe you can get lucky and draw a tag on one of those elk they transplanted down there!  Good deal!  My brother has a No.1 in 7x57 and a No. 3 Liberty in .30-40 Krag.  Nice guns, both of them.  I'm saving up for one myself.

armory,
Thanks for the wishes on a Tennessee elk hunt.  Reports are that the elk heard is doing well here, but it may not grow fast enough for a hunt in my lifetime.
slimman, congrats on your 6X6.  I'm glad to hear that the .416 is a good shooter.  I'm just starting to play with mine.  I guess for awhile it will be my "over weight" deer rifle, with reduced loads.  We do have  bear and boar in this part of the state.  I may just have to give it a try with some of them.
I don't guess that I ever met a good rifle that I didn't like.  I'm looking foward to seeing what this one will do.
Best,
TnNuc

Hey TN, I am outside of Knoxville and not 3 miles from my house they had to move a big bull cause they were afraid some of our fellow statesmen would blast him at night. Let me know when you get that 416 shooting and we can put the 416 and the 458 through their paces

JC,
We might just have to do that sometime.  I'm still on a search for reduced loading data using SR 4759.  I found some tested data for Accurate 5744, but I've been told that 4759 might work a little better.
This thing could turn out to be my one "all around" gun.
It's a little on the heavy side, but the weight makes for a steady off-hand hold.  If our elk heard ever grows to hunting size I'll be in the front of the line for to buy a tag.
By the way, do you have a range near Knoxville where you shoot?
Later,
TnNuc

TNnuc,
I have a range about 20 minutes from home it is run by the city of Norris. It has a 50, a 120, and a 224. The engineer had one too many brews the night before shooting the distances. I bet you could call sierra and hornady techs and they would help u with a reduced load. I think the wife is getting me a membership to the OAK RIDGE Shooting club, got a 1000 yard range among numerous others.

AA5744 has to be one of the best powders ever for cast/reduced loads.I burn lots of it from .223 to 45/70.it is a bulky powder no fillers wanted or needed.
the current handout from accurate has the data or just go to their web site.

Regarding reduced loads, I have a Model 70 Winchester in .416 Remington Magnum.  One load that I have used quite a bit features Remingon brass, Federal 215 magnum primers, 72.5 grains of IMR 4895, and the 350 grain Speer Mag Tip.  This is a good load to use for practice and it is still fast enough for hunting.  I've chronographed it at 2,450 fps which means it would have about 4,600 foot pounds of muzzle energy.  Out to 200 yards or so that ought to make a good elk, moose, and bear load without beating your shoulder to death.
