taurus 94 DA vs single six pistol. which one ?
« on: October 19, 2004, 01:03:48 AM »
i am going to buy a pistol. for coon hunting at night. sporting good store has a taurus 94 in 4 inch adjustable sight ,new for 244.00. they also make the taurus in a 5 inch barrel.  also they have a ruger single 6,       6 inch barrel with 22 and 22 mag cyclinders for 300.00. which gun would serve me better. i am leaning towards the taurus 94 because it is easier to load at night with the kick out cyclinder. your thoughts. thanks. marty

My vote is for the Single-Six.

For an intro, I own two stainless Single-Six revolvers. I've looked at the Taurus revolvers, but have never shot or owned one. I'm also not a coon hunter.

For .22s, I prefer stainless and adjustable sights.

One of my Single-Sixes is the current "Lipsey's special" with 4-5/8" barrel and adjustable sights. I believe Ruger catalogs the same gun in blue, but the stainless is a limited run. I paid $329 for mine at Cabela's.

-I presume most of your shots will be at short range. The short barrel should give you adequate sight radius for sufficient accuracy.

-The Single-Six gives you the option of the .22WMR cylinder for a little more power. The extra power of the WMR might come in handy, I don't really know. Just a thought...

-As far as loading goes, I don't think the single action will hamper you that much. Loading isn't that difficult after familiarization, and you probably won't be making enough shots to make speed a major consideration.

I'm not necessarily anti-Taurus, but I think the Ruger might be a better firearm. I have had EXCELLENT service from every Ruger handgun I have owned.

Good luck!

thanks for the info. i went with the single six today. they had a 6 1/2 barrel.  i would have liked the 5 1/2 but this will be ok if i ever want to put a scope or red dot on it. thanks. marty

Considering the quality or should I say the lack of quality of the last few Taurus guns I've bought I'd say go with the Ruger.

Great choice, I really, really enjoy my single-six and shooting the 22MAGS is a blast!!!  Someone may want to point him to the "ejector" rod fix to get off on the right foot.....
