Angled or Straight Eyepiece
« on: October 19, 2004, 01:03:47 PM »
I'm finally going to break down and buy a spotting scope and, thanks to the volumes of information on this forum have narrowed my choices.  The one piece of information I have not seen on spotting scope discussions is the choice of the straight eye piece or the angled.  Looking for some input from GBO members.

Which to you prefer in the field?  Which at the range?

Thanks in advance for the discussion.

In the field I would prefer a straight because you can look down the side of it and get it aimed close to where you want it.  For the range I prefer the angled because it is much easier to use without getting up when sitting on the stand next to me.

Since I use mine almost extensively on the range I have the angled.  You can get by with it in the field, it is sometimes just harder to find what you are aiming it at.

For field (hunting) use the straight for sure. On the range it really depends on how you use it. If you plan to have it on the shooting bench then angled usually is best but again it can depend on the bench set up. I use a straight on my range as I do not have it on my bench but on a tripod next to it. I do get up to use it. My current bench just isn't large enough to accomodate a scope on it and I've seen few I thought were.

When I build my covered firing line I do plan to make new benches and do intend to make them much larger and then might have room on the bench for a spotting scope.

Thanks for the input.  I'm leaning toward the straight.  Although I'll use it more often at the range, convenience seems more critical in the field.  I won't lose an opportunity because I have to stand up at the range.  Since it's taken me this long to buy one, I know I won't buy both.

Slightly switching gears, I'm looking at the Bushnell 20-60x80 elite or the Nikon Sky and Earth in the same power range.  Any preferences?

I have the Bushnell. SUPER SCOPE. I honestly think I could read a newspaper at 100 yards with it. Best spotting scope I've ever looked thru anywhere any time and I've looked thru a bunch. It's huge tho. Way big for taking on a hunting trip unless you're traveling by vehicle. Comes with a nice carry case tho. I love mine and wouldn't part with it for anything.
