Walnut replacement stocks...Cheap!!!

Did reading that get your attention? I hope so, because if a bunch of us get together we may finally be able to have them!!! I was just looking at another section of this forum and went to a link www.gunstocksinc.com . They have partially inletted walnut stocks for most guns for $40.00. How about a bunch of guys who are SERIOUS about getting a walnut stock for their favorite Handi, and who will follow through and buy one from them, calling them or e-mail them in a group effort to see if they will start producing blanks for us. both straight and pistol grips and perhaps a nice custom designed forearm..........What about it? any thoughts?....<><....  (2 piece stock sets start at $65.00)

Anyone ever buy from this company before? They also make thumbhole stocks for you non-traditionalists.

I will ask my dad about them.  I know that he has been talking to them about making a stock for his encore out of some walnut he had cut down last year.  Other than that I do not know much about them.  I will also see if he has been down there since I know he talked about it.
I must be crazy.

22KHornet, That would be a great help!!! I forgot that since this site has members from across the country (the world even) that someone here might be close to them!!! Thanks to you and your dad for whatever you can do or find out. I would think there
might be a large market for the stocks, at least as large as for the TC Encores....<><....

Anyone else interested? It would be nice to know if the idea might be feasible...

Hi guys, I just received this answer to my attached inquiry, sounds good to me!!!

"Hello Andy,
We make semi-finished stocks for the NEF guns but they are not big sellers so they are only made after the payment is received and the order confirmed.
We make the stocks in thumbhole style, factory original style and non-thumbhole with cheek-piece.
The factory original style prices for plain walnut start at $65.00 per set.
We also make them in other grades of walnut and laminates.

"Hi, I was wondering about the possibility of you producing a set of stocks for the H&R Handi Rifles. I have several of those guns and frequent a website for H&R shooters. I feel there would be at least as large a market for those as for the TC Encore stocks. The good thing is the same blank would fit all H&R Handi Rifles, Sportsters, NEF's (rifles and shotguns) and Pardner and Topper Models. Many of us on the site ( www.graybeardsoutdoors.com ) swap stocks from those guns all the time and have been looking for replacement walnut stock for a long time. I feel whatever tooling costs there are would be quickly returned since the same stocks would fit so many models of guns....AND there are currently no aftermarket walnut stocks made by any manufacturer you would be the only one, you would have the entire market...Thanks,  Andy Martin"

Looks as if they do carry everything we have been looking for, thumbhole, straight and Monte Carlo!!!.....<><....

Thanks, MSP.
That sounds like it might be better than getting deluxe classic shotgun stocks.

I got pictures of the thumbhole stock via e-mail. The stocks looked great even though I was interested in a straight stock. I  was unsuccessful in my efforts to post them here, I was told by someone I asked they possibly used a different program than I have, it may be possible to post them here but I am "computer challanged" so I cannot do it....<><....

Wow, that non-thumbhole stock is plain walnut? I like it, might force me to get my Handi Rifle out of layaway and snag one of these stocks. Was the $65 the group price?

Wow, that is some serious wood! I like them allot. I'm interested in a straight stock as well as the Monte Carlo stock pictured above. I was never a big fan of thumbhole stocks in terms of looks but have yet to shoot one so I am unaware of the benefits shooting-wise.

I'll be watching this post for more details.

Semi-inletted, does that mean minor sanding or router/Dremel tool work?
I'm a bit skittish when I see fitting required. Willing to give it a whirl though.

Guys:

Here's an additional stock from Gunstocks INC...and my correspondence with him...

Mike,
The plain walnut Stinger thumbhole stocks are $70.00, the plain walnut target varmint forends are $45.00.
All this talk about a need for stocks for the handi rifles has gotten me enthused again so I have built a monte-carlo stock with tear-drop pistol-grip and double palm swells, I will be adding a R.H. rollover cheek-piece to this stock with a palm swell for the right hand shooter, we will also make a left-hand version for the lefty's if the right hand model is accepted well. The stocks will be left extr long for those people who require an extra long LOP.
Here is a picture of the monte-carlo stock.

ED

These are some of the nicest stocks for the money I've seen...and the prices are real reasonable compared to Wenig Stocks...he also has other wood types...Curly Maple...Sycamore...and can do end caps and pistol grip caps too....and can fit the recoil pad for you prior to final finishing

Pachmayer recoil pads fitted....$25.00

Limbsaver recoil pad fitted.....$35.00

Thanks MSP for making us aware of this Stock Maker...

Thats OK Mac, I was lucky to find a partially inletted and almost completed walnut Fajen stock on E-bay that the sellers father had for years and had worked on but never finished before he passed away. I don't know how old the stock was but walnut sure looks and feels great on these little guns, I finished it with Tung Oil and its plain but pretty.
My hope is that these newly available stocks do not come very thick at the pistolgrip/wrist area like the original NEF stocks are. I also hope they come so as to more closely meet with the reciever and not extend 1/8" out all around the reciever....It is a lot of work to get that wood down evenly for a non-stockmaker like me....<><....

I'd like to get some feedback and pictures from guys here that may try these stocks before I do....

MSP:

I talked with Ed on this...and they are larger than the frame for final fitting of the owner...he didn't asy exactly how much larger...but with it off...and being Walnut it shouldn't be to hard to take it down to the frame...and then put 2 wraps of masking tape on the reciever and sand into it...I'll be picking up one of those Black & Decker triangular sanders,,I used my neighbors for redoing some chair spindles and picture frames.. and.they work great on them......I believe he told me that they take them down to 60-100 grit...so that will probaly leave 1/8"-1/16" all around...I  don't like the factory stock fit either...and will be getting a set or 2 of these to dress up my RMEF Whelen and 308 Ultra when I get it as well....It's something I wanted to do for quite a while...

Thanks for the info Mac. I tried to use a palm sander to fit mine but it was a bit to agressive, ended up using files and hand sanding, tedious. I think your right about those nice little triangular finish sanders....<><....

All unfinished stocks must be left oversized to allow for the final fitting and sanding, if the stock was made to the exact size and then the customer sanded it in preperation for the finish the stock would end up being smaller then the metal it was fitting to
