Thanks for the info Mac. I tried to use a palm sander to fit mine but it was a bit to agressive, ended up using files and hand sanding, tedious. I think your right about those nice little triangular finish sanders, wish I had thought of one, my wife has wanted one for a long time. I could have been a hero and bought her one (then used it for my stock!!!)....<><....

Is this concept going forward, anybody running with the ball? I sold one of my rifles today and have some money burning my pocket, so a group purchase sounds good to me, especially if we cut a decent deal.

I don't know if anyone has approached them about a "group purchase" but I tend to think not or it would have been posted here. I did see someone ask if these were single purchase prices or if a group purchase was required and the answer is these are single purchase prices. I am  intrested in a regular walnut stock (w/matching forearm) and I am really interested in a regular but long (14"-16" I read somewhere above) walnut forearm to go with the uncheckered Fajen walnut buttstock I have....<><....

When I had talked to Ed..he said that these stocks would be made to order...and that he doesn't have these made up till the are payed for....

We make semi-finished stocks for the NEF guns but they are not big sellers so they are only made after the payment is received and the order confirmed.

Now I don't know about everyone else...but I've looked for a long time to find such a nice set for our Handi's at a resonable price...and I'm sure that as soon as the upcoming holiday season is over for me...that I'll be having a set made up for a little project I going to be putting together...

A couple of my pet peeves about our Handi's has always been the fit & finish...and the wood that is put on these rifles...and the way I see it...if they are going to call a rifle " Ultra"...it should reflect it...is some fashion...not mearly by name...or by a laminated stock...but I know I'm in the minority on this...since most folks buy them because the price is reasonable...but...it would be nice to have the option of having one fully dressed out.....and that is my intentintions on my upcoming project...

They look great.  I'll take two sets.  1 laminate rollover cheekpiece non-thumbhole stock and target/varmint forend, and 2 the same only in plain walnut.  How do we order?  Group or individual?

Mike as I understand it all we have to do is call and order. They take payment over the phone by credit card, then make and send you the stocks. You can order them long and cut them to the length you want or order them all cut to the finished ordered length with a recoil pad attached and fitted to your stock. Just final fitting (if desired, finish and your good to go. A group purchase is not required. I am planning on ordering a nice long (14"-16")  forearm to match my Fajen buttstock and go from there. I would like a flat on the bottom out it with a slight scnable on the tip....<><....

Here they are...

Well....I just ordered this set ...with the roll over cheek piece and palm swell...and the Target/Varmint forearm.....and added a Feather Crotch forearm tip & pistol grip cap...swivel studs and Limbsaver recoil pad from these nice folks....I cannot wait till it comes in and I got my little project underway...it will have a 308 barrel on it...which I'll be wringing out...with quite a few factory loads and handloads...then...if all goes well I'll be shipping it out to Montana to be rechambered to a 30-06 AI and having a set of dies cut for it at the same time...so things are working out real nice....I'll be putting a steel trigger gaurd and steel forearm spacer too...just to jazz things up a-bit........

MSP:

This might interest you...if you go to Ed's site...look at this...this wood be a full 16" of forearm...and best of all...Ed said it will fit the NEF's....these are good to go...he doesn't have them instock yet...but will have next week...you could almost have a full Manlicher type stock...in your choice of wood...this might just be the ticket for me once my 30-06AI project is completed...cause next in the wings is to have a Buff Classsic barrel cut back and recrowned to 26"-28" depending.....I think it would sweeeeeeeeeet.....especially if I can get the barrel recontoured to 1/2 octagon.......what do you think...???

Be still my heart!!! That forearm in walnut matched to the Fajen buttstock I already have and all put together with my 19" .280 barrel!!! Stop me, help me!!!, I'm drooling, no I'm hallucinating, no, I really drooling!!, it's all over my sweatshirt!!!  And it's all your fault buddy, I'm lusting over your described 26"-28" barreled 45-70 with a half octagon barrel and thinking of my short barreled walnut stocked .280. Separately those are 2 wonderful thoughts. Together I find it difficiult to comprehend them at the same time. They are both such wonderful images!!! ....<><.... :)

Looks like a full stock would be easily within reach. About 4" of barrel extends back into the frame and you could cheat another 2-3" at the muzzle with an endcap.

DJ:

Ed probably can put together any combination you want...all it takes is a phone call...I would like to see a-lot of folks really dress up these Handi's....if enough folks not only show interest...but actually go ahead and order some...the choices offered will increase...that's what it's going to take...

Ever since I picked up my first Topper...I wanted to have some good furniture on it...I'm sure there are a-lot of guys who couldn't see spending any extra on them...but not me...I've always said...if they are going to call them "Ultra's" they should at least look the part

Mac,

It seems as though ths may be a good product.  However, I certainly wouldn't want it to turn out like the custom barrel fiasco!

I can see a nice straight grain walnut stock, that fits the receiver instead of having a 1/2" of pallet wood hanging out on all sides, as a desirable item.  That may be the way for me to go and later, if the workmanship is good, have them make a stock for my Beretta Silver Snipe

Ed told me they have some overhang...but it's not 1/2"...maybe 1/16"- 1/8" and that's for final finishing...we will see how they look...when I get it here next week....pictures will be forth coming...if I can get this durn camera to working....durn...another project to work on...

Mac,

You seem to be the guinea pig on a lot of these deals!

I have been in contact with Ed about this other project, but haven't worked out the details yet.  I have a local option to check out on it before I do anything, since Ed said he didn't have a pattern for the forearm I need for the Beretta.

What did he say about the forearm inletting?  Does he cut it for a particular caliber or is that part of meaning of "semi-inletted"?

Mac. it's a personal taste issue. I could not be happier than with the factory synthetics. They are functional, zero maintaince, and nicely formed. At the same time, I can't look at a gunsmithing problem without seeing solutions. I'm not gonna buy one of these stocks, but I like this approach. This guy seems to be getting the basic stuff down, keeping his prices reasonable, and leaving enough extra wood to work with. His pistol grip butt design is far superior to the butt ugly factory design and could be made even nicer with a little rasp work. He ain't claiming to sell drop-ins or 98% finished, just giving you a good start on the job.

Paul:

Well....someone has to at least be the first...  even though I don't think I am on this one...and if noone took a chance...well...we would never know...

The forearms per ED are semi-finished as too the buttstocks...he uses the 223 barrel dimensions as a pattern for them...and I believe he said the standard barrel on that ...not the bull barrel and if your using a 38-55 or 45-70 or one of the slug barrels that are larger you will have to open them up some...and the bolt hole and for the forearm is the same as on the factory Handi...on the Varmint/target forearm...he supplies the longer bolt since it's a-lot thicker than the factory...

DJ...

Sooner or later someone will start making a deceant synthetic stock for them besides the factory, the factory ones are pretty good...but there are other companies that make some really great ones too that I would like to see making them......I just amazed that there isn't more choices available with as many of them that's beeen sold over the years...and I hope the wood I get is a nice and full grained as the pictures he sent me...

I was the successful bidder on the Ebay walnut roll-over butt stock, called to pay for it today and also order a matching target/varmint forend for it. Rhonda said she didn't have a match for the ebay butt, so they would make me another another roll-over butt with a matching forend. Total cost with shipping was $105. I also put in a good word for MSP Ret and Mac11700 cuz they got the ball rolling on this for us...A big thanks to them and anyone else for all their time spent....and also a plug for Graybeard Outdoors and the fine bunch of shooter here, she thought it was great that we are spreading the word about their products and would like to see our rifles after we get em done.

Wow, that was quick! Ed and Rhonda just emailed me, they shipped the walnut roll-over butt and target/varmint forend today, just ordered it Monday....looking forward to doing some finish work, haven't done that for years other than just applying an oil finish. Anyone got any secrets or tips to finishing a gunstock?  thx

I have refinished my old Mossbergy .22 and because I am interested in these stocks for my Handi Synthetic, I did a search on the internet. There are all kinds of different techniques, but a couple recommended Birchwood Casey Tru Oil which is what I used on the Mossberg. This one is sold in a refinishing kit with sand paper and what not. I was not as careful with my sanding as I should have been but the finish came out looking quite good. That would be what I use if I get something from Gun Stocks Inc.
