How close can I mount my scope to the barrel?

It is about 1/16" off the barrel is that okay or too close.  I really like a low sight plane and it is really low.

It is a Remington 742 auto so the bolt isn't a problem.

Only thing better than 1/16th is 1/32nd or 1/64th....

They're right ... closer is better.  HOWEVER, if it's an adjustable-power type, sometimes there's a sticky-out bit on the eyepiece.  If the scope is somewhat forward, so the eyepiece is over the body of the action, make sure you've got enough room to allow that to turn.  Also, you might want at least enough additional clearance to allow for scope covers ... and the flip-up type may need a little more room.
