Today in History

It was a cool morning in the hills of West Virginia. A young lady had
been up most of the night. She was looking for a gift from God. Only 7
days from her 26th birthday she was waiting to give birth to her second
child.

The pain was unbearable at times but she hung tuff. The doctor looked in
on her and said to relax it was going to be sometime yet. How could she
relax, the pain wouldn't let up. Suddenly a pain came upon her and she
could wait no longer. The midwife called for help and to the delivery
table they went. There was bearly time to put her on the table as they
all screamed for the doctor. In he came in a rush just in time to catch
the child as it was born all at once.

Into the world a child came who wouldn't wait. The mother was in rough
shape from the "quick" birth and was sometime healing. She had succeeded in her task though and upon looking the child over she named him Lynn Alan. That was October 21, 1950.

I write this to give honor to my Mother, Velvia Lorine Garrison
Halstead. Her own mother died when she was but a child. Her father being
a ladies man gave her up and to the county poor farm she went. She was
thrown in with all the others to make it the best way she could. After
several years her sister managed to marry and have a home so she could
take her out of that terrible place. She ended up being passed from
family member to family member never having a home. In her late teens
she started working to make her own way. It was war time and things were bad but she never gave up.

Once the war was over she met a returning solider and after a short
while she was married to my Dad. She went threw alot of troubled times.
Alcohol haunted her and was a battle she lived to win with the help of
God. She lost a son to a gunshot wound. This was something she never got over. Through it all she was a mother anyone would have been proud to have. She over came it all she said only for the love of her children.

This is the day each year I take time to honor my Mother for all she did
for me in life. She left this earth in 1992. It seems like only a few
days ago at times. I hear her call to me alot these days and I miss her
dearly. So today on my birthday I say thank you Dear God for all the
happy memories of my Mother. You see she thought your bithday was the
most important day of your life so for it I say thanks Mom.

Creeker,
A very eloquent and touching story.Thank you.Of all the people you watch pass through your life and then to the hereafter your mother is the hardest one to lose. Not that you do not love your father or other family/friends, it's just that mothers are so special.
My mother was the light of my life and the inspiration for same. She died of a sudden heart attck on July 21,1980.There are not many days in my life since that I do not think of her and remember what she taught me while I was growing up.
They are special.

Only the love of God is greater than that of a mother.
