Having problems getting my BAR .280 to shoot
« on: October 21, 2004, 08:31:19 PM »
Hi all,  what a great web site.  I purchased my .280 BAR back in 1988 and I love the feel of the gun, however I have never found a load that it really seems to like.  I have tried several factory loads and several hand :( loads with Nosler 140 gr, Speer 145, and Horndy 154's.  Have also tried factory remington in 140's and Winchester Silver tips in 160's.  Almost everytime I take the gun to the range it will print the first shot dead on the line 2 inches high, but the follow up shot is usually 2 inches away.  And the best groups are about 2 inches.  I usually shoot off of sandbags and have tried those shooting rests.  Does anybody have any ideas?   :(

You didn't say what powder you're using, that may be the culprit.  In addition, make sure that every screw is tight on your scope rings and mounts.  You may try changing primers, oddly enough sometimes that is all it takes.  Use caution though if you are shooting max loads and drop the powder charge a bit.  This is just a safe practice to excercise whenever you change components(bullets, primers, case, powder).  In addition, you may try playing around wth the seating depth.  Good luck

Hmm, I've had great success using both of those powders in my 280, although its a bolt gun.  I think that if you check all of your actions screws and screws on the mounts/rings then you'll just have to play with powder charges and seating depth.  Good luck

I don't have a 280 but I do have a BAR (30-06) that shoots sub MOA with 180Gr Sierra Game Kings, 180Gr Nosler BT's & 165Grn Nosler Partitions.  All are hand loads using IMR4831 & IMR4350

When shooting for groups, how long are you waiting between shots?  I have found that with a BAR (at least with my BAR), waiting a timed 5 minutes between shots really tightens the groups.

Dark Squares 1/2", lighter Squares 1/4"
