FFF More Accurate In Side Hammer Renegade Than FF???
« on: October 22, 2004, 12:40:24 AM »
I have heard that triple F black powder is more accurate than double F in side hammer guns.  Is this true?

I have an old TC Renegade and have been shooting 100grns of FF with Hornady 240XTP sabots as my hunting load for many years.  4"-5" groups at 100 yards is about the best it will do.  If I drop the load to 70 grns, the groups decrease in size but I hate to give up that much horsepower.

I am always looking for a better load and setup.

I have been shooting FFF for about 10 years now.I feel it is a little faster burning and gives me better groups.
The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

45/70..it's almost a religion.

I started using FFF and found better accuracy. I think with my rifle the big deference is the FFF leaves less fouling. I do not wipe between  shots when hunting, so the less fouling the more consistent it is.

Only way to find out is to try both and see which is the best.  Each rifle, like people, is an individual.

Best of luck

P S  my 54 rifle shoots better with 3 f also.

I find that my t/c hawkens and my new englander favor 3f goex over 2f powders 80 grains of 3f with either 320 (50 cal)or 380(54 cal) REALS conical and a wad shoot great. :D

Would there be any pressure or velocity difference when using the same load of each FF or FFF black powder?

Yes there will.  The FFFg will produce higher pressures at the same volume measure as the FFG.  Reduce your loads accordingly.  In the manual that came with my GPR, Lyman suggests reducing FFFg by 20% from FFg loads, for equivalent velocity.
Do it outdoors!!
